"In the Name of God"
« on: June 30, 2009, 09:52:46 AM »
For some reason, this song had never really hit me; I always sort of liked it, but never thought it was that cohesive or great.  Well, that has all changed now.  It "hit" me in a big way when I listened to it over the weekend, and I have to say that I now consider it the best song on ToT, and one helluva good song.

Only took me 5 1/2 years to realize this. :lol :lol :lol

I'm the opposite.  I loved it when the album came out, and now I think it's just kind of OK.
Hef is right on all things. Except for when I disagree with him. In which case he's probably still right.

What a weird revelation to have so late. This song has always been the stand-out song of ToT for me.
Even the long instrumental section always manages to keep my interest and works, unlike some other songs on the album. It has a good chorus, good riffs, lots of good sections, and the outro is just amazing.

I don't know what changed for you, but glad it clicked for you. Definitely one of the saving tracks of the album.

Awesome, Kev! In The Name Of God is definitely my favorite track off Train Of Thought with Stream Of Consciousness closely behind. The instrumental section heavily keeps my interest. Also, how about that awesome use of the harmonic in the main riff after the instrumental section? Awesome.

INTOG during L@B outro solo .. need I say more?!

For me, it was the Live At Budokan version that struck me. For some reason, the Train Of Thought studio release is very sterile, but on Live At Budokan, Endless Sacrifice, This Dying Soul, SOC, ITNOG, and even As I Am (which I don't care for) are much more alive and incredible.

Something about that live version of ITNOG is amazing.
would have thought the same thing but seeing the OP was TAC i immediately thought Maiden or DT related

I'm sure most of you knew this, but at the end of the song, after the last repeat of the chorus, the battle hymn of the republic can be heard in the background

Amazing song. I didn't really care that much for it - until I watched Live @ Budokan. Now it's easily the best track on ToT.

Yep, I knew that, and it sounds great.
How many people here sing along with the Battle Hymn every time they listen to the song? :lol *raises hand*

Yes!

And that is why I love the L@B outro, he starts off on that melody, and then just goes all out.

ITNoG is a great song, I'd put it as second best on ToT.  I sometimes have to be in the mood for it, but it's still a damn good song.

I always noticed the voices, but I admit I had no idea what they were actually singing until it was pointed out, and then I listened closely and realized "oh yeah!"

It's definitely one of the most "epic" sounding things they've done.  I like the song a lot, but the instrumental section is one of my least favorites.

Great song. The instrumental section gets tiring, but has a great JM groove beneath it. Also, the outro is awesome (I love the studio outro better than the Budokan version of it). But overall, nothing much to complain about it.

Meh. ToT gets too much hate.

I think the whole album is solid. Endless Sacrifice often gets overlooked but I think it's a tune. The worst song is This Dying Soul IMO, and that's still a good song.

It's a breath of fresh air to see them kick-back and create a modern metal album/solo-fest.

ITNOG and As I Am are in my Top 15, definitely.

I'm kind of in the same ballpark here. I always enjoyed the song, but to be honest, the thing I really liked about it were the heavy riffing and the solo's. Now, after all those years, I finally hear how freakin' epic this song is. It's now high in my top 10 Dream Theater songs. It contains IMO one of JLB's best vocal performances on a studio track ever.

The solo's, the riffage, JLB owning it.

Great song, instrumental section is heavenly, for me atleast.

Anyone see the metallica similarities in TOT? Not just in the riffs and singing but in the structure as well.

For 3 out of the 7 songs we have the same pattern going on

long intro -verse-chourus-verse-chorus-long instrumental-chorus/outro chorus - outro

I used to think TDS was different, but it's basically jsiut two songs stuck together by a few riffs

SOC is like TCOK or Orion, a long repetitive instrumental track that changes halfway before going back to the original riffs

INTOG is probably the biggest, some people say only, prog moment on the album because it moves flawlessly from section to section. The songwriting is brilliant, and the song never feels overlong; except at the outro and then you want it to feel overlong.

Therefore, INTOG is the most unique song on TOT.

ITNOG is a Top 10, maybe Top 5 DT song for me.  Absolutely awesome.  The instrumental section is one of my fave's from the entire DT catalog.  I was quite happy that JLB pulled the vocals back together on L@B after the debacle of Pull Me Under.  Great riffs, amazing unison, cool base lines ... the whole damn thing rules.  *must go listen*

The riff at 3:02 and 3:17 (L@B - "Straight is the path, leading to your salvation")... chills.
I didn't know I could handle another 10 inches and it was rough but in the end I'm glad I did it.

Probably my favorite track on TOT. I love the screaming vocals in the background from JLB somewhere near the middle of the song. I also love the vocals at the end singing the Battle Hymn.

There's very little to find at fault with this piece and JR's ending is pretty much perfect IMO. As MP said on his Drums of Thought commentary, ITNOG is and probably always will be, a set-ender or concert-ender as an encore... it just sounds definitively show-ending!

Such an epic song! You have to wonder if they tossed in all their best writing in the first song they wrote (this one) during those sessions?

-Marc.
ATTENTION - I am currently taking a hiatus from running any Survivors at the moment,
but feel free to check out others' that are running in the Polls/Survivors Forum!!! Maybe in the coming months, I'll start up again with a different band if there is interest...

The chorus isn't great. And the whole "religious beliefs, fanatic obsesssssssions" part is pretty bad.

But the rest of the song is freakin great.
