It truly is a good song, but there's one section that brings it down and stops it from being perfect - it's the verse before the guitar solo. It just drags and it's not nearly as beautiful, melodic or memorable as the rest of the song. Everything else is really wonderful, though, especially the lyrics and LaBrie's performance.

I think it provides necessary contrast to the rest of the song.  Instead of "this is the life, make the most of it, if you get lost you'll find your way home" it's "this is the life, you better make the most of it because you're gonna die..."
It's the Internet.  Everything everybody says, no matter how factual-sounding, is opinion.

My 2nd favourite song after Breaking All Illusions. James makes the song for me. I really love the melody he and Jordan play in the verses; just a very pleasant progression. Plus the chorus is just so damn good. Needs more love.

Setra, I think that is the best statement I have read on this forum.  Very well said.

I just listened to this song and there is so much power when the band comes in at the beginning

This is the only "loud" song on the album to me. I like it, but a little quieter - FOR ME - and I'd be happier.

Talk to Glassdream on MP's forum. I think he's been working on fixing the "loudness" on the album

Oh, I've seen his posts. I think, just in my opinion, this song is loud. The rest are beautiful and have dynamic. But, I JUST got my vinyl today and my player is at my fiancees house...so it'll be a few days.

The vinyl is FAR ahead of the CD version.

The glassdream comment wasn't at a shot at you either

I've heard that the vinyl is like listening to a different album. I'm SUPER excited for it.

It sounds excellent. I literally had my stereo at about 32 for the CD (which is low volume) and the vinyl at 14 (which is high) It's excellent

After my first handful of listens, I found myself liking TITL the most, and for me that's odd, as I am more of a metal head. The outro is fantastic when everything gets kicked up a notch and Mangini is pounding on the snare in quadruplets.

IMO, this is the most pleasing ballad to here right behind "The spirit carries on" which I think has been overplayed in recent years. In fact, I think DT loves what TSCO brings to a live show and wanted to expand their repertoire of such songs. It's a ballad but it has a certain kick and energy to it that is really pleasing.
"And there is a Catskill eagle in some souls that can alike dive down into the blackest gorges, and soar out of them again and become invisible in the sunny spaces. And even if he for ever flies within the gorge, that gorge is in the mountains; so that even in his lowest swoop the mountain eagle is still higher than other birds upon the plain, even though they soar." - Herman Melville, Moby-Dick

I am loving this song. Especially the part:

"Memories will fade
Time races on
What will they say
After you're gone?"

Something about the atmosphere feels very good there. Great matching of lyrics to music.

I was drawn to this song right from the very first listen.  For some reason it really speaks to me.  Very triumphant but also melancholy.  It's just a great song.

Wow. Just wow.  I always knew DT had it in them to create the perfect ballad, but in the past, they had fallen somewhat short.  The closest was their live version of Hollow Years, but that was largely because of JP's amazing electric soloing, not found on the original song.

But here is an absolutely genius piece of work with some of JLB's best vocals to date, a lush textured sound, and my god--can JP's solo from  4:25- 5:05 be any more spectacular?  JP has had flashes of truly emotional playing that ranks up with Joe Satriani, David Gilmour and Criss Oliva at their best, but the solo here really slays just about everything he's done in the past.

And if that wasn't amazing enough, there are the lyrics, which are among the most poignant and relevant the band has ever done.

Hats off to to the band for putting together one of the best songs in the catalog.  I can only hope to hear that slice of heaven live when I see them next month.

 :tup :heart :heart :heart :tup

i agree with you about petrucci but the song is probably the 2nd worst on the album. its a decent song, and still better than some soft stuff like "disappear" or "anna lee" but its just...decent. what really saves that song is petrucci's playing. jordan does a good job too i guess. the song deserves a 5 or 6 out of 10.

Bump for this great song, a song which is steadily moving up my favorite DT songs list.  This could very well end up being my favorite song from ADTOE once the honeymoon phase finally passes. :tup :tup

Same here. might be because I'm faithful to my religion. But it's message speaks. Seeing your fellow brothers/sisters straying, while you continue to live gracefully knowing this is our life we are, we should appreciate it. It's hands down my favorite song off ADToE. My favorite guitar solo too. The key solo also rules.
I appreciate.  :tup :tup

If i'm singing along to it I have to be careful singing "Life begins with an empty slate" as i seem to have issues not pronouncing 'an empty' as 'a nempty'.
Glad I was alone the first time I tried that!

TITL and LNF have been my favourites from ADTOE for a long time. I've always loved DT's "shorter" constructed songs, so TITL ranks highly with me on ADTOE.
Only King could mis-spell a LETTER.
Yep. I think the only party in the MP/DT situation that hasn't moved on is DTF.

Incredible song. I love the lyrics and JP's solo. Jumped out at me immediately during the first listening of ADTOE. Really hope that Dream Theater adds it to their set list on the next leg of their tour so we can have it on a future DVD.

It has become my favorite song of the album.  Quite strange because it's not much the classic metal prog masterpiece I enjoy from the band.  But the melody and the keyboards parts from JR are amazing.  I keep singing it in the car.
With all respect, sincerely yours

I still love this song to death. Man, when the whole band comes in after the guitar intro...and then...and then JR and JLB go all melody-domination-mode.

The guitar solo is tasteful and appropriate for the song.

I can't imagine what's not to love.

Honestly, I think I can say that about the entire album.  Part of me almost wishes they waited a bit before releasing DT12, because I don't feel like I have even nearly exhausted ADTOE.
