Bottom Ten: Worst/Least-Greatest Dream Theater Songs
« on: September 12, 2011, 12:08:36 PM »
We’ve all seen top ten threads and top fifty threads and ‘which is your favorite off each album’ threads.  I, for one, am curious to see the other side of the coin.  So, which Dream Theater songs do you dislike the most?  Or, for those of you like myself who like pretty much every Dream Theater song, which songs do you like the least?

(Note to the mods: I’m posting this in the spirit of curiosity and good clean fun.  I don’t mean for this thread to cause any trouble or anything.  That being said, I do recognize that discussing what we dislike about the band could lead to some controversy, so if you’re worried about it, feel free to lock this.)

Anyway, my list is in alphabetical order (to avoid having to put it in any other order):

6:00
Just let Me Breathe
Raw Dog  (Was initially The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun, before Ali mentioned Raw Dog)
Repentance
Status Seeker
Take Away My Pain
The Answer Lies Within
The Best of Times
The Great Debate
The Shattered Fortress

Keep in mind I said I like all Dream Theater songs, just, these least.  :)

In chronological order-

WDADU (minus AFIL, Ytse Jam, TKH, Afterlife), which makes 4
Lie
Scarred
Space Dye Vest
You Not Me
Never Enough
Raw Dog

I can tolerate Lie and YNM, and the rest are about the only DT songs I could say I "hate". The rest of DT's songs I can at least tolerate and listen to without repulsion. That is one hell of a good hit rate.

edited in Raw Dog. Removed Endless Sacrifice. ;)

Status Seeker
Light Fuse and Get Away
Anna Lee
You Not Me
The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun
Cover My Eyes
Speak To Me
Never Enough
6:00
Prophets of War

I pretty much strongly dislike/hate all these songs except Light Fuse and Get Away and The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun which is only possible because of the WDADRU recordings.

It's a little upsetting that I'm so torn between which DT song I hate the most... But I really want to change Repentence with The Answer Lies Within... I just hate them both so bad  :lol

Heh, thanks.  Thought I might catch a bit of a shitstorm for 6:00 and/or The Great Debate.

I like the vast majority of DT songs, but if I had to create a "bottom ten" list, here it is:

1.  Through My Words  (favorite of the bottom ten)
2.  The Ministry of Lost Souls
3.  Hollow Years
4.  Regression
5.  Another Day
6.  The Ones Who Help To Set The Sun
7.  Eve
8.  Prophets Of War
9.  Space-Dye Vest
10.  You Not Me (least favorite)

Depends on the ballad, really.  Take Away My Pain, for example, ranks VERY highly on my list (as do Disappear and Vacant, although admittedly, those are not standard "ballads").

But in general, I definitely prefer the heavier, louder, and/or upbeat DT songs to the ballads.

Holy shit you're right.  10 posts in a bottom ten thread before anyone mentioned Raw Dog?  That's pretty amazing to me.  And I love the fact that you're mentioning it is making people reconsider their lists.  Including me.

Taking my list from the (relatively) recent rank the songs thread, these were my 11 with the lowest rankings (Since I had several with the same rating).  Although I hadn't ranked any of the WDADU at the time as I had never really spent too much time with the album.

Metropolis Pt 1
Space Dye-Vest
Vacant
Take the Time
New Millenium
Burning My Soul
Just Let Me Breathe
Beyond This Life
Disappear
Hell's Kitchen
Lines in the Sand

Now realize that my bottom 11 DT songs still rank above the entire catalogue of other bands I like and listen to.

3. Status Seeker
4. Honor Thy Father

6. Innocence Faded
7. Space-Dye Vest
8. 6:00
9. Lie (if Derek is playing keyboards then it's worse than Scarred)
10. Scarred

Through Her Eyes
Honor Thy Father
Endless Sacrifice
In the Name of God
These Walls
Forsaken
Repentance
These are the only DT songs I would describe as 'bad', but to finish the 10 i suppose:

In the Presence of Enemies
Wither
You Not Me

I don't know, if I include WDADU, the Majesty Demoes, some of their unreleased stuff I'd probably find 10 songs I don't really like enough to even listen to much, or that are at the bottom end of those I do like (To Live Forever, Raw Dog). Taking them from JLB studio albums alone is a bit more difficult.

Through My Words
Through Her Eyes
Regression
You Not Me
Anna Lee
The Answer Lies Within
Lifting Shadows Off A Dream
Take Away My Pain
Burning My Soul
6:00

I can't knock anything from WDADU, it's just not fair.

In no particular order:

Wither
I Walk Beside You
These walls
Innocence Faded
The Mirror
Eve
Sacrificed Sons
Burning My Soul
The Dark Eternal Night
The Ministry of Lost Souls (too bad, really, because it's an epic title)
It's the Internet.  Everything everybody says, no matter how factual-sounding, is opinion.

Wow this is a pretty surprising list.  Scarred is easily a top 10 DT song for me, and Lost Not Forgotten could get there in time.  The only song I don't like on this list is You Not Me.

3xodus, that kind of comment can in no way be considered "constructive criticism."  Either find a better way to articulate your thoughts or keep them to yourself.

In no particular order: You Not Me, Burning My Soul, Constant Motion, The Dark Eternal Night, Forsaken, A Rite of Passage. I'm tempted to throw ITPoE part 2 on here, but I don't think it's a train wreck along the lines of the 6 I've mentioned here.

The first two suffer from the Falling Into Infinity label disease, the next two from Systematic Chaos metal syndrome, "A Rite of Passage" from the autopilot virus, and "Forsaken" from the Twilight disorder.

I also didn't include Raw Dog because I don't consider it canon (just as I do with WDADU).
