guitar plectrums
« on: July 11, 2011, 06:05:56 AM »
So I found these stainless picks at the Jim Dunlop website. Thought I'd try and find some at a store somewhere if I can. The idea of an even brighter sounding pick that doesn't wear down is intriguing, and plus I've never thought of any plectrums to be made of anything apart from the usual plastics!

So tell me what you think of stainless steel plectrums and just what you use regularly. I've been alternating from .73, .88, 1mill - all Tortex -, Jazz III and Tortex Jazz picks.

I use Fire & Stone picks in celluloid. 0.81 mm thickness.

I use them for guitar and bass, they feel good for both.

I use a polished brass pick called the Q-Pic.  I absolutely LOVE them.

I use these: https://www.amazon.com/Dava-Control-Guitar-Pick-6-Pack/dp/B0002GOJYK
I've never gone back to using an ordinary pick after trying these.

I bought a few stainless steel picks by a brand called Ice Picks. They sound very nice and bright on acoustics and clean stuff, but have a very very loud, chimey attack that you hear on the unwound strings when playing with gain that I hated. Plus they dent and destroy your wound strings up like crazy.

I dunno, maybe a brass one wouldn't do that.

edit: Also, I use the big rounded triangle Acetal picks by Clayton. Usually between .80 and 1mm size. They have a really nice attack and sound f'kin huge. Rarely I'll use an Eric Johnson Jazz III when recording or something.

I've been using Dunlop Nylon picks lately.  I think they are my favorite feel.  I'll probably be sticking with nylons.
If anyone in this thread judge him; heyy James WTF? about you in Awake In Japan? Then I will say; WTF about you silly?

I haven't had a lot of trouble with them.  Nice bright tone and a great feel in my fingers.  I hate for my picks to have any give, unless I'm strumming an acoustic or something.

I always end up gravitating back towards the ole 73 & 88 gauge tortex, that's where I'm at now lol

In high school my buddies and I built a Van Der Graaf generator.  You know, to get girls.

I shift between the Eric Johnson Jazz III's and Tortex Sharps. Depends on what i'm playing. As a general rule, the pick has to be stiff and sharp so i can be as precise as possible, especially with a free floating right hand technique.

On guitar, ever since I started using Jazz III's, I can't play anything else. Don't know why.

On bass, I prefer Dunlops triangular ones. I can't remember what they're called, and they don't seem to sell them around here anymore, which is why I dig out old disgusting ones whenever I'm playing a song that requires a pick.

I picked up an old .88 JD USA Nylon plectrum of mine today and I had a play, I thought about it and I think I'll be getting some of these soon. Haven't used any in years.

I usually play .73 Dunlop Tortex, but ever since getting my 7-string, I've been leaning more towards the 1.14s. I keep a stock of both around to fit my playing mood.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

considering i shifted my main guitar's gauge to 11s, i've been using tortex 88 again. it feels like they suit almost perfectly.

I've been stuck on Jazz III's (black ones) for years now.  Everything else just feels too clunky.  If I'm just messing around or campfire jamming on acoustic or whatever I'll use my fingers or whatever's lying around, but if there's serious shredding to be done it's gotta be Jazz III's!

I feel the same way. When I first got a guitar eleven years ago, I got a bunch of flimsy picks and none of them cut it for me. Maybe I'll try something other than Jazz III sometime soon just to shake things up, but they are perfect for me.

Pretty much always use Jazz IIIs of some sort. Carbon-fiber Max-grip ones as of late, but I've been known to use the black nylon and the ultex ones too. I have a few funky Dava picks around that I'll occasionally bust out on the acoustic for a laugh. I'd like it if I could somehow stop wearing down all my picks, though...no matter what kind of pick I use, they always get worn down...the nylon Jazz IIIs probably take the least time for that to happen (At least it's not nearly as bad as the tortex picks in that regard)

I started out with Dunlop 1mm's but over time I've been starting to use Jazz IIIs more and more.
Seasons change, and so can I
