I certainly know someone who fits the same mold the original poster brought up.  I've been friends with this guy since 1st grade, but I'm seriously considering deleting him off my list because he updates his status 5-10 times a day with mopey, compliment-fishing dribble.  If you knew him only through facebook, you would be amazed he hasn't offed himself yet.  Even his display picture is meant to make him look more pathetic than he is.

I'm considering deleting my account as well, which is a shame because the old facebook was pretty neat.  I remember when it was all about keeping in touch, and your profile actually mattered.  There never used to be status updates, and now that's the only thing that matters on that site.  It doesn't even show up on the feed when someone updates their profile with a change of address or anything like that.  It was a good college networking site back in the day.

As soon as facebook was opened to kids that weren't even highschool yet, it totally went to shit. Not to mention that my family tries adding me on a daily basis. I have denied my aunt 7 times now, she thinks I decline her as a joke or something.

:rollin :rollin Dude, my aunt and cousin do the same thing.

A dumb one from a mate today but I guess quite funny:

 "pick a number.... any number"
"No, the correct answer was 4815162342"

...weird.

I don't mind statuses that much, what really gets me is the "LIKE" button, which some people seem to press for every single one of their friends' comments, statuses, pictures. Also the stupid things people became a fan of. I'm sure we'd all be a fan of DT. Maybe you're a fan of your favourite actors or authors. But what the hell is up with becoming a fan of "naked cuddles", "turning the pillow over to get the cold side", "being lazy", "eating" , etc. and filling my news feed with that crap. Everyone's a bloody fan of eating! Well, most people. I saw someone who had become a fan of "I do stupid stuff when I'm drunk". WTF?! That doesn't even make sense.

As said, it's cool for keeping in touch. I tend to use the messaging system the most. Thank god the taking photos everywhere craze has passed though.

One girl I'm friends with keeps lamenting about how much she misses her boyfriend.  Now its okay to miss your boyfriend, especially when he's in college, but you don't need to proclaim it to the world EVERY.  SINGLE.  DAY.

:lol I found a solution to that. I never decline people I don't want on facebook. I keep them in an eternal waiting phase...

At one point you could "like" notifications of relationships breaking up. I think they removed that though.

Ouch.
I made it quite clear to my mother that I didn't want her profile anywhere near my profile.

The second one, maybe she just wanted some opinions? Idk, wouldn't bother me.

true, but she threw "I am scaredddddd!!!" at the end of it.... clearly she craves attention.

MOTHER FUCKER. Quick, everyone get pissed for that sole reason!

I have a friend who posts depressing status updates on a bidaily basis.  It's always something about how her life is in woe, or panicking because "she can't find art in life anymore" or some emo shit.

have too many to quote, but I like one of mine from not too long ago "just failed his final japanese exam, got home, ate his lunch only to find that it was incredibly mouldy but only on the underside so I didn't see" (ignoring the 1st/3rd person error)

And yes, I remember fb when you had to sign up through a school or college or uni. Bring those days back please - if you are bored then go on reddit or megaclip or something, stop junking up a tool I use to communicate with people.

I don't understand the mentality behind pointless updates, bids for attention, or attempts to get pity.
I also don't really "get" people spending so much time on facebook and similar sites. I wouldn't want people to always know where I am or what I'm up to.

Though, I've always been someone who only wants attention if it's for something actually noteworthy, and who would never want pity, as well as someone who likes his privacy.

Status updates are lame.  I actually used them for status updates for like a week, then decided to just use them for stupid silly stuff.  Because it's no worse than a "real" status update, and might even be amusing.

the one thing i do enjoy about pathetic statuses is the ability to click the "like" button at inappropriate times.

i'm still waiting for facebook to make a dislike button.

I have no problem with the status updates, as long as they're not as lame as 'in the kitchen'.

The thing that annoys me, as came up on 5/8 earlier this week, is that a very large percentage of Facebook activity nowadays is people joining groups and doing quizzes. I could swear only a year ago, people spent far less time doing these and actually invested more effort in keeping in touch with each other.

THIS.

My God, is it really that difficult to keep in touch with each other on an easy-to-use program? I see people doing quizzes on there all of the time, and yet they never want to keep in touch or respond. It's becoming impersonal, like Myspace has already become, all for the sake of "being fun."
Yeah, I think people go onto Facebook nowadays just to piss about, pass time, play games. Rather than talk to people.

YES.

As I said before, I think the groups are crap, almost fullstop.

But the Like button really fuckin' irks me. It's another reason people are getting so lazy with actually communicating with each other, I think. All I have to do is click this button, and I guess I've kind of said something, sort of, and that's enough.

And I'm actually surprised people on here want the Dislike button. One of my friends on Facebook started a discussion on this from a status update, most people seemed to think it'd be a bad idea.

just so she can get commiseration from her fellow females.  And so they can ask her about the love life she's just dying to have an excuse to talk about.

I know, but I'm saying that for the people that don't have it set to private. I for one like having people know if I am single or not, but when I end a relationship I can't stand being asked why... at least being expected post it openly for everyone to see.

i think you can still display relationship status and just block it from going to news feed. so if the status changes, news feed will not post it.
