Carteret County on the NC coast has roughly 3 feet of standing water on the roadways.

Wind is starting to pick up and there's a slight drizzle outside at the moment... it's coming, and according to the current maps this is going to hit us hard.

request - those posting comments about things going on in their own area, please post the nearest notable town and your state. this is too interesting, don't want to miss details!

Expecting enough rain to overflow our pool... what do people do about that? It's above ground... not sure what to expect with that one! Also starting to think I should remove the deck box even though it's kinda heavy..

Taking all the loose items of my land and storing them in the sheds.  Don't want any projectiles flying around tomorrow.

Some things will stay where they are, actually. I remember a frisbee not going anywhere during a powerful category 3 hurricane some years ago. :lol

Jen.  Do you have a portable sump pump?  TV's been saying take you pool water level down no more than a foot.

no but our pool's pump can be used to backwash the system and let out some water. thanks!

edit - should be fun here because we not only live at an elevation of about 1600' compared to the rest of my area's 840' (fun for wind), but we also have our house built right into a hillside. the water normally flows down behind the house then diverts around it due to our massive new drainage system, then continues down the hill in front of us and down to the lake. Wonder if we'll get washed away? LOL

I'll get a creepy/interesting diversion this afternoon.  The main LIRR artery runs right behind our apartment.  For the first time since we've lived here (five years), there won't be the sound of trains running, as the system is shutting down.  However, the low-lying yards are being emptied, and we're not that far from the huge Jamaica and Sunnyside yards (The Sunnyside yard has LIRR, NJT, Amtrak and maintenance).  So all of the trains that are being layed-up on the tracks will be going by us.

Dingy, humid and very calm here right now.  Jen, for reference for my future updates, we're in Kew Gardens (11415).

EDIT:  Rain started falling at 9:50.

Just trying to get things all set for tomorrow. One of my friends moved into school early and they have to evacuate until Monday, so he'll be staying with me for the weekend.

Should actually be kind of fun.  :lol But I hope everyone stays safe!

Just woke up and its raining damn hard now. Haven't gone outside, but the wind sounds pretty bad too. At the moment its like a really bad thunderstorm, and according to the maps we got a long way to go! Trying to go back to sleep now though, and we'll see how it progresses from here (I have to go to work at 10PM tonight if the power doesn't go out before then, that's gonna be fun).

Oh and I'm in Prince Frederick, MD (20678).

Sparked up the generator and it roared but I hope I don't have to use it.   Took down all the things that can fly around outside and bracing for tomorrow around noon.  Hope everybody stays safe.

Raining here. The weather warnings issued for my area say 35-45mph winds with 65mph gusts. for the inland county area around me I think the biggest risk is losing power. My condo at the beach will get hit with the hurricane force winds but its a strong building and has withstood up to Cat 3 in the past.
