Praying Mantis Appreciation Thread
« on: August 21, 2011, 09:01:34 PM »
A bit random but...

I love these things. The Mantis is the only insect I like. The only insect I will let near me and even crawl on me (Ok I've let Ants crawl on me, but I fed them to Ant Lions right after). This creature is just bad ass. Why did I make this thread? There was one on my car last night, just chillin' on the window. I was running late so I had no time to run around to the other side to take it off, so it got to go on a little adventure of windy proportions. As I was driving I kept looking over to make sure it was there. I really wanted it to stay on the car the whole way, even opening the window hoping it would crawl inside, but as I was at a stop light, making a turn, it disappeared into the darkness.

I caught a glimpse of a ninja last night. It was wonderful.

Appreciate these amazing creatures.

No praying mantises here. Always wanted to see one though, they seem cool. Oh well, the only insect I like here are dragonflies.

Never had the pleasure of coming across one, though I do get some wicked orb spiders.  The ones that make the really cool stereotypical webs, I think.  Always a cool sight.

Also,

I caught a glimpse of a ninja last night. It was wonderful.

Um, I did see a ninja at the local giant strip mall, a couple weeks back, but he looked more like this:

When my friends and I were in Miami for a car show, on the way home we saw a ninja standing on the corner. And I mean an actual ninja (not a gansta wannabe) in the full getup, swords and all. When we looked back he was gone.

A good ninja can do that.

praying mantises are pretty awesome. I came in contact with one last fall at work. There was one just chilling in the entrance of the grocery store I work at. I scooped it up and released it outside behind the store in the grass where it won't get stepped on or killed by customers. Really cool thing to experience.

I don't think that you can encounter praying mantises here, but they fascinate me. They're kind of scary, but I actually don't mind it.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Mantises are awesome.  Unfortunately the closest I've ever gotten to a mantis was one climbing on an inaccessible window on the second story of my house.

Hey, how does one differentiate between gendered mantises?

Not sure, but I know the females are way bigger than the males. Also, a long time ago, in a state far far away, we caught a Mantis and kept it in a terrarium we made for lizard eggs. It was neat to watch, but we had to let it go eventually.

I like my spiders.  They keep all the other bugs other than moths eaten.

There are many weird insects and arachnids here where I live, but no praying mantises.
