Video Game Music
« on: July 16, 2011, 02:41:24 AM »
I am going through a huge video game music phase.  Video game music was actually the first genre I really got into, before DT.

Some songs I've been replaying over and over:
- Metroid: Prime - Magmoor Caverns
- The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker - Credits
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Stone Tower Temple
- Rayman 2: The Great Escape - Woods of Light

But so far, my two favorites of any game:
- The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask - Final Hours
- Metroid: Prime - Phendrana Drifts
"All great works are prepared in the desert, including the redemption of the world. The precursors, the followers, the Master Himself, all obeyed or have to obey one and the same law. Prophets, apostles, preachers, martyrs, pioneers of knowledge, inspired artists in every art, ordinary men and the Man-God, all pay tribute to loneliness, to the life of silence, to the night." - A. G. Sertillanges

Baldur's Gate soundtrack is awesome. Diablo has some nice tunes too, check for example the Tristram theme https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2evIg-aYw8

My favourite soundtracks are the ones from Metal Gear Solid series. Especially the music from MGS3 and MGS4 is great.
I also really enjoy CoD: MW and MW2 soundtracks - the latter is Hans Zimmer's work, so no wonder why it's so good.
I have been playing Witcher 2 lately and it has some beautiful music, too. They have even included a soundtrack disc in the regular edition of the game.

Also, Baldur's Gate soundtrack. Thinking about some of the tunes makes me wanna replay the game.

This.

And then there are the Elder Scrolls Soundtracks, Silent Hill Soundtracks, and unusually for me the Half Life 2 Soundtracks.

But come on, the ending songs for both Portals are pretty damn fantastic!

I decided to bring this thread back because I had found some really good renditions of Video Game Music recently.

First up:

The Keyblade Wars by Rozen and Reven

Following the success of NieR: Glory to Mankind, Rozen and Reven are back for their second studio album as a duo, this time tackling the Kingdom Hearts saga.

Kingdom Hearts is full of classic dichotomies (good vs. evil, light vs. dark), unexplained lore, time travel, interconnected characters, and above all excellent music. All of which makes it the perfect ground to explore with multi-genre, large-scale arrangements. The Keyblade War weaves along the boundary between light and darkness using themes from across the series, from the heart-pounding “Destati” to the melancholy vocals of “Sanctuary ~After the Battle~.”

All music arranged and produced by Rozen and Reven. Featuring performances by the Sofia Session Orchestra & Choir, along with returning collaborators ETHEReal String Orchestra, Ro Rowan, Kristin Naigus, and more.

Excellent arrangements of the Kingdom Hearts Songs. Hollow Bastion and Master Vs. Master sound awesome Metallized. Simple and Clean, Sanctuary are also nicely arranged.

If you played the Kingdom Hearts series and enjoyed the music, you should enjoy this.

Going into the way back machine.... Shadow of the Beast.  Played this on our Amiga back in 1990. Went to the computer store to buy Gauntlet but it wasn’t available for Amiga so the guy said to buy SofB.

Great music... https://youtu.be/YKyB51o9AJg

My absolute favorite game music... just rattling off the top of my head, will probably be forgetting a few:

- Mario (RPG, World, World 2, 64, Sunshine, Paper Mario, Thousand Year Door, Odyssey)
- Zelda (Link to the Past, Ocarina of Time, Majora's Mask, Wind Waker, Breath of the Wild, Link's Awakening, Oracle of Ages)
- Metroid Prime
- Baten Kaitos: Eternal Wings and the Lost Ocean / Baten Kaitos Origins
- Golden Sun / Golden Sun: The Lost Age
- Final Fantasy (1, 4, 5, 6, 7, 10)
- Pokemon (Red/Blue/Yellow, Gold/Silver/Crystal, Ruby/Sapphire/Emerald)
- Donkey Kong Country (NOT 2 or 3 - just the first game, and Tropical Freeze)
- Quest 64
- Snowboard Kids / Snowboard Kids 2
- Maple Story
- Sonic the Hedgehog 2
- Street Fighter II: The World Warrior
- Animal Crossing (all of them are good but I'm specifically referring to the original GameCube game)
- Harvest Moon 64
- F-Zero GX
- Mystical Ninja Starring Goemon
- Red Dead Redemption 2
- Super Smash Bros. Melee
- Chrono Trigger

That should just about cover it. Almost all of those games are massively influential to me in no small part due to their incredibly strong music (which is pretty influential itself)

Dang, weird to see a post from myself from 2011. Feel I've grown up a bit in the last 10 years (from 20 to 29). This is so weird.

EDIT: Oh yeah, I'd add that I really like the Ace Attorney music recently. I just discovered that series, actually. And Fire Emblem is pretty great too.

With second (or third, or fourth...) Metroid Prime. Some glorious music in that series.

Return of the Obra Dinn. I think there is only about 30 minutes of music for the whole game, but damn if it isn't awesome.

D'oh.. I forgot Xenoblade 2, and I even have the Torigoth and Our Eternal Land tracks as my morning alarms! That game absolutely has one of my favorite soundtracks.

Mystical Ninja is criminally underrated. At least, that game is. I never played any of the Japanese ones... there was Goemon's Great Adventure but I didn't like that nearly as much.

I could listen to Dire, Dire, Docks anytime I need to chill. It's so calming and perfect for an underwater level. My favorite from any Mario series.

Earthbound has a neat soundtrack as well. I enjoyed the weird funkiness and rhythm battle style.

Man, this has got me in the mood to listen to some video game soundtracks! Currently listening through some Zelda stuff.

I always have Final Fantasy music on rotation but that's the only stuff I consistently listen to. As for OC Remixes, I have a few of the Final Fantasy albums they released, on my ipod, and a few other songs. There's just so much on there, it's hard to know where to start. I need to go through a load of 90s soundtracks today I think.

I have so many it would become a list that feels endless.

A recent soundtrack that really got me is God of War (2018). Many memorable melodies that perfectly align with the game, and a great use of vocals (male choirs, female vocals). It is also a soundtrack that I listen to outside of the game.

And as for a shoutout to a game soundtrack nobody paid attention to, I really think Knack II has a great soundtrack. (The game itself is also actually pretty legit when played on hard in my opinion, especially in coop, my only real gripe is the super whiny human kid that tags along with you).

I haven't played the Xenoblade games but they do have some amazing music in them! Final boss theme in Xenoblade 1 rocks!

I'd like to throw in the first Mass Effect game. I love synth music and Mass Effect soundtrack has some amazing synth music in it. Almost sounds cyberpunkish. Not to mention the epic ending song by the Canadian band Faunts.
