2011 Emmys v. Hate
« on: July 14, 2011, 08:15:30 AM »
TV is a far superior medium to film when it comes to content these days.  There's so much good TV, that there is too much choice when it comes to giving out accolades and awards.  Nevertheless, the Emmys try and do their best do bungle obvious choices.  Behold:

Outstanding Drama Series:

Boardwalk Empire
Dexter
Friday Night Lights
Game Of Thrones
The Good Wife
Mad Men

Honestly, one of the better categories.  Still, one of these shows does not belong, but is apparently beloved amongst Emmy voters.

Who will win: Mad Men
Who should win: Mad Men
What should've been nominated: Terriers

Outstanding Comedy Series:

The Big Bang Theory
Glee
Modern Family
The Office
Parks & Recreation
30 Rock

Ugh.  Just ugh.  The number of these shows that had good seasons: 2.  The number of shows that had great seasons: 1.  Omitting Louie is bad, but I can acknowledge that it's not exactly everyone's cup of tea.  Omitting Community is  inexcusable.

Who will win: Modern Family
Who should win: Parks & Recreation
Who should've been nominated: Community (and it should've won)

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Drama Series:

Steve Buscemi, Boardwalk Empire
Kyle Chandler, Friday Night Lights
Michael C. Hall, Dexter
Jon Hamm, Mad Men
Hugh Laurie, House
Timothy Olyphant, Justified

All in all, not bad.  There are two relics here, but the rest of the choices are pretty solid, although I think I would have preferred Michael Pitt to Buscemi.

Who will win: Jon Hamm
Who should win: Jon Hamm
Who should've been nominated: Donal Logue

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Drama Series:

Kathy Bates, Harry's Law
Connie Britton, Friday Night Lights
Mireille Enos, The Killing
Mariska Hargitay, Law & Order: SVU
Julianna Margulies, The Good Wife
Elisabeth Moss, Mad Men

Pretty solid list here, save Kathy Bates.  I would just like to point out that by now, The Killing has more Emmy noms than The Wire.  There is no God.

Who will win: Elisabeth Moss
Who should win: Elisabeth Moss
Who should've been nominated: Not sure.

Outstanding Lead Actor In A Comedy Series:

Alec Baldwin, 30 Rock
Louis C.K., Louie
Steve Carell, The Office
Johnny Galecki, The Big Bang Theory
Matt LeBlanc, Episodes
Jim Parsons, The Big Bang Theory

Half of the nominees here are terrible.  Luckily, I bet the two nominees from The Big Bang Theory split the vote, allowing someone worthy to win.  It'll probably be Steve Carell just for nostalgia's sake, and the fact that he hasn't won an Emmy, but in a truly just world there would be no contest.

Who will win: Steve Carell
Who should win: Louis C.K.
Who should've been nominated: Joel McHale

Outstanding Lead Actress In A Comedy Series:

Edie Falco, Nurse Jackie
Tina Fey, 30 Rock
Laura Linney, The Big C
Melissa McCarthy, Mike & Molly
Martha Plimpton, Raising Hope
Amy Poehler, Parks & Recreation

The Emmys are desperate to keep honouring Edie Falco, apparently in denial over the ending of The Sopranos.  But I bet she splits the vote with Laura Linney, allowing a more deserving candidate to win.

Who will win: Tina Fey
Who should win: Tina Fey
Who should've been nominated: Toni Collette

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Drama Series:

Andre Braugher, Men Of A Certain Age
Josh Charles, The Good Wife
Alan Cumming, The Good Wife
Peter Dinklage, Game Of Thrones
Walton Goggins, Justified
John Slattery, Mad Men

No bones here.  Very good list.

Who will win: John Slattery
Who should win: Walton Goggins
Who should've been nominated: John Noble?  I'm not really sure anyone else deserves to be in this list.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Drama Series:

Christine Baranski, The Good Wife
Michelle Forbes, The Killing
Christina Hendricks, Mad Men
Kelly Macdonald, Boardwalk Empire
Margo Martindale, Justified
Archie Panjabi, The Good Wife

Another solid list.  Not much to say here really, except for that there were another 3-4 actresses who deserved to be in here too.

Who will win: Archie Panjabi
Who should win: Margo Martindale
Who should've been nominated: Khandi Alexander

Outstanding Supporting Actor In A Comedy Series:

Ty Burrell, Modern Family
Chris Colfer, Glee
Jon Cryer, Two And A Half Men
Jesse Tyler Ferguson, Modern Family
Ed O'Neill, Modern Family
Eric Stonestreet, Modern Family

Abominable.  Modern Family had a pretty poor season, as did Glee.  I wouldn't be surprised if Jon Cryer walks away with this just for being not insane.

Who will win: Jon Cryer
Who should win: Uhh... Ed O'Neill?
Who should've been nominated: Chris Pratt and/or Nick Offerman, who both crush anyone else here.  Danny Pudi/Donald Glover would also be acceptable.

Outstanding Supporting Actress In A Comedy Series:

Julie Bowen, Modern Family
Jane Krakowski, 30 Rock
Jane Lynch, Glee
Sofia Vergara, Modern Family
Betty White, Hot In Cleveland
Kristen Wiig, Saturday Night Live

Just as bad.  Betty White's obviously going to win, although obviously she shouldn't.

Who will win: Betty White
Who should win: Kristen Wiig
Who should've been nominated: Gillian Jacobs

And as a final sidenote, The Cleveland Show got nominated for best animated show, while Archer did not.  There is no God.

I am very happy to see Justified get a few nods.  That show is a Tour De Force and Timothy Olyphant, Walton Goggins & especially Margo Martindale.

Also happy to see Alec Bladwin, Tina Fey & Louis C.K.

I forgot to mention the best news: the Emmys have now decided they love Idris Elba!  He was nominated twice!

Also, the worst news: H. Jon Benjamin voices two of the funniest characters on the two funniest animated shows and doesn't get a voiceover nomination. WTF

Archer wasn't nominated for anything?  WHAT.  I've only seen the first season but it was the hardest I've laughed at anything in a long time.

Americans place far too much emphasis on award ceremonies and other trivial accolades. (ie - Oscars and their politics)

It's nothing more than red-carpet nonsense, where the whole world gets to bow down to these 'heroes' of the TV screen. Yes, let's all take our photographs and receive autographs by these 'stars' who are quite clearly more important than the common man. After all, they are standing on the red carpet, and we must simply watch. Fascninating stuff.

So yeah, count me out, not interested. And I love good TV.

Praise can be good, especially when it comes from merit, but really, do we need to complain when certain individuals feel let down by these TV bigots who decide who wins and who loses? It's nothing more than a celebrity farce.

Good performances are deemed by the viewers themselves. I have zero interest in what goes on behind the scenes.

They shouldn't even have an Oscars this year, given that pathetic excuse of an industry that we see today.

Yeah, rant over.

The thing about the Emmys is that critical acclaim is important to keeping shows on the air, and there is no measure of critical acclaim for television that is more recognizable or marketable than an Emmy.

The Corner won a bunch of Emmys.  And it was even less accessible than The Wire or Treme.

I've seen about 15 episodes, mostly over the first couple of seasons.  No point in watching it any more.

He's good, and the clear highlight of what otherwise is a pretty mediocre show, but he's not in the league of Hamm, Olyphant, or Chandler.  It doesn't help that the writers of the show don't give him much to work with.

I doubt it.  The last couple of seasons of House have not been received well critically, and seeing as how I could probably predict half the story-lines because the nature of the show forces itself to hit the "undo" button each season, there's no point.

Obviously.  Just like every single awards ceremony.  Doesn't mean that there aren't a lot of those nominees that deserve to win.  I dunno, I've always had a hard time overlooking people presenting their opinions as fact, whether that's their intention or not, but when you say a ceremony is flawed specifically because your personal favorites aren't nominated/don't win, that's exactly what it sounds like.

Who cares what critics have to say, if I followed them all the time I'd miss out on some good TV.  Besides, you have nothing to stand on when you've only watched 15 episodes.

I dunno, I've always had a hard time overlooking people presenting their opinions as fact, whether that's their intention or not

I'm getting kind of annoyed seeing this compliant pop up because if someone really does think that, it's almost always just their perception. We're on an internet forum. Pretty much everything is implied as an opinion. A person does't need a disclaimer in every post stating that what is being said is their opinion, no matter how stubborn and sarcastic they sound, because the mere fact of being on a forum is that disclaimer.
