I rarely hear this song get any praise. It's one of my top 5 favorites, and it's what single handedly got me into DT. And the orgasms during the instrumental section... beyond epic.

It gets all kinds of praise.  But, yeah, good song.  If it didn't have porn in it, it would be one of their best.

This is one of those songs that SEEMS underrated because nobody talks about it all that often.  But in reality, nobody talks about it all that often because there's very little argument about it.  Pretty much everyone likes it.

Or maybe I'm just way off base.  Oh well.

Anyway, I love it.  Strongest individual song off SFAM, in my opinion.
Sincerely,
Jaffa

I don't think it stands that well as a single song, but in the context of Scenes From A Memory the combination Home/The Dance of Eternity is pretty much the climax of the whole album :D

Yeah that kinda drags down the song for me.  Fun fact, the porn only comes from the right channel, so if you're listening through headphones, you can just take it for a minute or so during that part.

I actually remixed the entire song so that the orgasm moan plays throughout the whole thing.

I also listen to Home when I watch pornos, works very well!

I thought the porn really added to the atmosphere. That section of the song is one of the highlights of the entire album to me, though not necessarily for the porn. xD It's mostly the whole progression of it.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

I love when JP throws the main riff from Metropolis into the song about halfway through. Feels good man.

I thought the climax was The Spirit Carries On?

Anyway, Home is great, even though it was my least favorite of their heavy songs until a couple of years ago.

-.- I wouldn't call it porn, it's about the affair shit going on in the story. You can hear Julian wasting his time with slot machines while Edward gets it on with Victoria. It's not porn and it goes on for a very short time, I don't even focus on the moaning when it happens. It doesn't take anything away from the song.

Anyways, I think Home has gotten a lot of praise.

My favorite DT song. Glad I got to see it on both shows I went. Gigantour and Maiden, was weird not hearing the intro at the maiden gig but JLB kicked ass.

Porn in Home?  WTF is this all about?

Home is amazing - certainly in my top 10 or 15. Saw it live and it made me appreciate it SO much more.  Originally I didn't love it.  DEFINITELY my favorite off SFAM.  No competition.

Home kicks ass. It's a massive grower. (Sorry). But seriously, when I first heard it, I didn't like it very much at all, I thought it stood out like a sore thumb on the album. But after numerous listens, I fell in love with it. One of my absolute favorites now. But yeah, I wish there was a version without the orgasm and casino noises.

Home is my absolute #1 DT song, probably in my top 10 songs of all time. I don't see anything unseating it for a long time. I guess I'm trying to say that I like it.

May I ask out of curiosity what bands composed the songs that fill out your top 10 all time songs?  I'm interested.

I haven't gone and done any detailed ranking, but I suspect we'd find most of the following bands represented in some fashion (in my top 20 at least):

Queensryche
Dream Theater
Electric Light Orchestra
Pink Floyd
Heart
Faith No More
They Might Be Giants
The Tea Party

"Home" resonates that well with me for the following reasons:

1. Excellent, clever lyrics, especially in the context of the larger story, where it is both literally and figuratively the climax.
2. Killer riff and music - dramatic music, I'd say. That (and clever lyrics/wordplay) seems to be what I love the most in any band.
3. I can identify with the emotions caused by cheating, neglect, betrayal and brotherly wrongdoing.
4. WOMP WOMP.

I was just wondering what bands have songs better than your favorite-ever DT song.  It seems most people, when they fall for DT, they fall hard.  So most people I assume have a top 10 all time song list with a few DT songs near the top, if not all of them.  It is good to have variety though!  I haven't heard a a few of those bands you mentioned.  I'll need to check them out!

I love all sorts of music, and am always eager to explore new bands and new sounds. But at the end of the day, regardless who I become a fan of, I always come back to Dream Theater. Dream Theater is like Home.

DT is like Home for me too. Not many bands really satisfy me anymore, which is very frustrating. I used to listen to a lot of old rock bands like ACDC, Van Halen, etc but now I rarely find myself listening to any of them. DT basically screwed all of my collection of music. Occasionally I find some bands that I really love, like Haken  ;D But if I receive a disk with music that DT can do better, Petrucci comes to my house and shreds it into pieces.

One of my 10 favorite DT songs, definitely.

I actually think the background porn stuff, which I barely noticed for months when I first got the CD, does a great job of that whole section building up to the keyboard solo.

Incidentally, even though I often don't like JR's solo that much, that one is completely awesome.  The way he bends that note around 8:40 or so (the very beginning of the solo) is totally rad.  And it is followed up with an incredible JP solo.

So, yeah, this song rules. :tup :tup

It does make it extremely difficult to play this song for other people to get them to appreciate it, without them thinking that it's done as a 'shock value' thing, or for some other tasteless reasons. It's hard to explain to people, "This is from a concept album and it fits into the storyline."

Once, when I was living at home, I was blasting Scenes from my room.  I forgot about that part.  Needless to say, my mom furiously barged in the room and I got in a ton of trouble.

See what I mean...

The worst part is, I tried and tried, and it's virtually impossible to cut that part out and edit it so that it goes seamlessly into the crazy solo. The only way to smoothly get rid of that part is essentially to do what they did on the "Single Edit" from the Greatest Hit CD.

I never thought of the moans in Home as porn :|. I don't really mind them. I think they, in a way, contribute to the story with all the affair thingy, but whenever I play the song with someone unfamiliar to DT or the song, I find myself hoping with all my will that they don't start questioning me about them when they start  :lol.

...that's exactly what I try to avoid  :lol. My mom apparently has gotten used to them or doesn't hear them though, because I've played the song in the car several times without any comments regarding the "porn".

I must be deaf, or have a porn-less version.

I LOVE that song, listen to it cranked all of the time, and never knew there was any sort of sexual stuff going on.  God I feel like I'm an idiot right now, haha.  I need to listen to Home more I guess!

Also, as a note, no one I've played it for has ever mentioned it or noticed it.
