Mysterious stranger? Dream job? I, uhh... what?
« on: July 01, 2011, 01:28:25 AM »
So I was on the register at work today, when this guy and his friend (coworker?) walked in. Guy #1 is probably in his mid to late thirties. Guy #2 is in his mid to late twenties. They weren't what I would call well-dressed, though they weren't poorly dressed by any means. They were well groomed, however, and had a neat look about them. I'm generally a good judge of how sociable people are, and I was right on the money. Both of these men had auras of charisma and general likeability.

So I was ringing these guys up for their pizzas and the following conversation transpired:

Guy#1: What's your name again?
Me: Tim
Guy#1: Is this your dream job?
Me: Ha, not quite.
Guy#1: Pays the bills, though.
Me: Yup.
Guy#1: What is your dream job?
Me: (I avoided mentioning my ACTUAL dream job of getting paid to play WoW while the Cowboys cheerleaders take turns fellating me.) Something in networking. I'll get my CISCO and A+ certifications, all that stuff.
Guy#1: Do you have high ambitions?
Me: At times.
Guy#1: What hours do you work?
(At this point, I was beginning to think "Is this guy going to steal my driver's license at gunpoint and tell me I have a month to go back to school before he kills me?")
Me: I'm usually off Mondays and Tuesdays.
Guy#1: What are you doing this Tuesday?
Me: I'm not sure; it depends on whether or not I'm in town.
Guy#1: You have a card or paper or something?
(I hand him a business card and he writes his phone number on it, then hands it back to me.)
Guy#1: Call me on Tuesday.
Me: Umm.. In regards to...?
Guy#2: Your dream job.
Me: Uh, what do you do?
Guy#1: Networking.
(They both walk out.)

What. The. FUCK.

I've spent so much time thinking about this that I've decided I'm going to call him just out of sheer curiosity. The probability that he's in the field I'm interested in per chance is pretty low, though not impossible. I've been rattling my brain trying to figure out what just happened. I'm going to call him on Tuesday and see whuthefuckizgoinon. I'm wondering if they run some sort of Ponzi Scheme or something similar, but those tend to be Craigslist posts of "WORK FROM YOUR HOME 100K A YEAR!!!!"

I'm totally interested in this when I probably shouldn't be. If he IS a legitimate job recruiter, they have a hell of a method.

Of course Dream Theater isn't that good. Good music is obviously about 3 minute pop songs and catchy hooks.
Dream Theater aren't that good. Neither was Beethoven, or Mozart, or Bach. Pfft, 20 minute epics. Who needs that?

I'm betting they're scientologists.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

We're called enthusiasts. Fetish has a negative connotation.

While I was reading that, I definitely thought it was going to be like in the movie Waiting, where a businessman eating at the restaurant compliments the waiter on the service, mentions a possible job, hands him a card... and it's a waiter position at another restaurant.

I googled this guy's phone number. Apparently he's a worship leader at a youth conference camp (not Scientologist or Foot-fetishinarians). He works at American Electric Power.

Isn't networking a broad term?

There is so little respek left in the world, that if you look it up in the dictionary, you'll find that it has been taken out.
