Need advice for restraining a cat
« on: June 23, 2011, 11:55:22 AM »
I'm taking care of a friend's cat while he's in Europe.  It's been 12 days so far and the cat has been hiding out the whole time.  Have a good idea where he is, but not going to tip him off until it's time to put it back in the carrier and drive him to my friend's house.  Anyway, the cat obviously is scared (psychotic) so might lash out in fear if I try to get it in the carrier.  Any tips?  Don't want to spend money on expensive kevlar gloves, etc., looking for Les Stroud (inexpensive) solutions.

Get some heavy gardening gloves, wrap several layers of newspaper around your arms and wrap with with duct tape. In the even that the cat attacks, your arms can be used as clubs.

In all sincerity, almost any of the devices in this thread (link) would do the trick. You might need to adapt them as it's a different animal, but the principle's the same.

Super glue.

Although you may have been tongue-in-cheek (or not), I'm liking this approach.

Or you could just try making friends with the cat.

Why do you need to put it into a carrier anyway?  Why can't the cat's owner come and deal with it when he get's back?

wet cat food.... seriously. They hear that can open and get excited. Make friends with it over food. Be very slow and gentle. Let it be weary of you and slowly pet it - but only a couple strokes (heh).

I've spent a good amount of time with the cat at my friend's house previously.  I haven't been able to get close enough to the cat to reassure it, and my stubborn nature has caused me to say "fuck you cat" and ignore it.  Friend lives 70 miles away and doesn't have a car, so trying to do a favor, but yes if this doesn't work, he's gonna have to come over and deal with it.

Good idea, it's been hardly eating the dry food I've put out.

Cats and dogs have no trouble sensing whether or not you're good people or a real bastard.  If you don't like the cat, then there's not much you're going to do with it.  If you actually make a genuine attempt to be chummy with it, it'll come around.

Yeah, maybe me and it were friendly when I was over my friend's house because we were forced to, but then the cat realized I'm a bastard in real life.

you can get those treats that come in a plastic bottle thing.  You shake that and the cat comes running.  They love those things.

try cat food or treats. if this fails grab a large towel throw over kitty, and grab and out in carrier. Be wary of those claws though.

I just don't understand what they were trying to achieve with any part of the song, either individually or as a whole. You know what? It's the Platypus of Dream Theater songs. That bill doesn't go with that tail, or that strange little furry body, or those webbed feet, and oh god why does it have venomous spurs!? And then you find out it lays eggs too. The difference is that the Platypus is somehow functional despite being a crazy mishmash or leftover animal pieces

If you really want to guarantee a successful outcome with the food, treat it to a candlelit dinner. As in, properly classy. Wear a suit. And order spaghetti, so you can both slurp on the same piece from opposite ends, and eventually meet in the middle like in Lady and the Tramp. (Or was it the Human Centipede?)

Then - toxic gas.

Grab the cat by the nape of the cats neck.  Leave the carrier standing up straight with the door open and drop the cat feet first while cradling the cat's bottom.

Yeah, if you attempt to grab the cat, pick it up from the skin of its neck. It doesn't hurt that cat unless you're purposefully pinching it or don't have enough skin.

My friend who used to be a druggy tried something that I think could work here.

Catnip. Smoke it. Well, not you, the cat. He smoked the catnip and blew the smoke in the cats face. I'm assuming he just got the smoke in his mouth rather than full on inhaling. Point is, cat gets high as fuck. He put the cat in the tub. Came back a few minutes later and poop was everywhere. A couple feet up on the walls and all around the tub.

uhh catnip doesn't need to be smoked to give the cat a "buzz". There is no need to blow smoke into a cats face at all.
