National Ignition Facility
« on: June 22, 2011, 03:19:43 PM »
Wow.  Just took a tour of this place in Livermore, CA as part of a workshop I'm attending this summer.  Details on that workshop here. I'll be completing Levels I-III this summer, and Level IV next summer.

The incredible part is that the theory of operation is actually very simple.  The implementation is where it gets a little tricky, but this looks like a somewhat promising source of energy through nuclear fusion.

Fusion is physics' Chinese Democracy.

If you end up working there, don't fuck anything up, I only live ten miles away.

Nope, just a third arm.  ;)  Actually, the advantage of fusion is that it doesn't produce high level radiation waste with the exception of some plant material.

I agree, it's been touted as the solution for energy since the early 50's but hasn't yet proven it's viability.  One of the existing problems they still need to overcome is the sheer amount of power needed to reach ignition.  Even then, it'll take more time and research to reach an energy surplus.

Cool. Congrats, man. Sounds like a cool place to work(shop) at.

You get more radiation from eating a banana than living near a nuclear power plant.

This is pretty nifty:

Yup, that's a cool illustration.  Yet another reason why XKCD is one of my favorite webcomics.  :tup
