Will do.  :tup

A whole bunch of their other stuff is incredible, even though Disintegration reigns supreme.

I never did get around to getting Disintegration, but did end up with Seventeen Seconds and Faith recently.

I've only heard the latter a couple of times, but the former is one of my most played jams, lately.

A Forest is one of the coolest bleak things I've heard; well, the whole album is, actually.

So I have Disintegration which I love and Wish, which I haven't really gotten into that much.

any recommendations as to which album I should check out next?

I'd heavily recommend Seventeen Seconds, which I just gushed about.

Like, check out the song A Forest.  If you like that, you'll like the whole album.

Some other good ones are Pornography, which is their darkest and grittiest album, The Head on the Door, which is more pop-sensitive, and Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me, which is kind of a big mashup of all their styles with various experimentations thrown in.

Bloodflowers is kind of a callback to Disintegration and is also amazing.

Also, I saw them live last November. Meant to post about it during that time but forgot. Absolutely amazing 3 hours or orgasmic Cure goodness.  :hefdaddy

The Cure is my favorite band of all time. I've gone through many musical phases (punk, psychobilly, jazz, metal, prog) and The Cure is the one band that I've never tired of. Glad someone started a thread!

Some recent happenings: Porl left (is going by "Pearl" now), Roger O'Donnell came back, and the band is still without a record contract.

Listening now. I dunno. The vocalist is extremely annoying. The music's pretty cool, though.

Seventeen Seconds is actually one of the weaker Cure albums, imo. It has some classics like A Forest, Play For Today, and M but too many weird/noisy tracks. Disintegration and Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me are probably the best starting points for The Cure, or Pornography for the pinnacle of their minimalistic Goth phase.

The soundtrack to my high school years along with The Smiths, New Order, and hair metal (yeah, I know).

Took my cousin to see them live a few years ago.  They performed an ultra-long set plus a triple encore because they had to cancel their summer tour.  This was a make-up date.  Simon Gallup's bass tone was something to be experienced as he performed onstage, especially when the band blasted through Fascination Street.

My first exposure to the group was a cassette version of the Staring At The Sea collection.  From there it was most definitely the Three Imaginary Boys/Boys Don't Cry record that I latched on to as the way I always wanted the band to sound.  Grinding Halt, 10:15 Saturday Night, Jumping On Someone Else's Train...all so good.  My all-time personal favorite though has got to be Head On The Door.  My favorite songs are in it:  In Between Days, Close To Me,  A Night Like This, and Six Different Ways all in one neat package.

Because of this thread, I was curious to see who's in the band right now.  Amazingly enough, I found out that one of the most underrated guitarists on earth, Reeves Gabrels is now in their lineup.  I'm curious to hear what he can contribute to the band.

One random thought that's related to The Cure:  I really hope that Fender can get with Robert Smith and release a custom Jaguar guitar, just like what the company did for Johnny Marr this year.

Reeves is just filling in. It's a bummer. I was watching some recent live vids and you can't even hear his guitar. I was hoping he would add some desperately needed oomph to the band.

I love both The Smiths and New Order, and The Head on the Door is my second favorite right after Disintegration.

That's a shame. I thought the great setlist of the Bestival live album was undermined by the rather thin and small sound of the band.

It took several years to click with me, and now I consider it my favorite album ever. If you stick with it, you might be rewarded.

Disintegration was such a jarring change when I first heard it back in the day.  I think everyone else, including myself, back before it was released was thinking that the next album after Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me would have more guitars and perhaps more horns.  These expectations of course were dimmed rather immensely when fuzzed out bass and synth washes were the order of the day instead.  Looking at it from an artistic point of view, it was a way for Robert and the band to keep things fresh.

A part of the problem is Jason. He's a good drummer but he can't supply that cavernous drum sound that Boris, Andy, and even Lol brought to the band. He has that piccolo snare and really pounds on the hi-hat. IMO, Robert keeps selling himself short with these lineups. He needs a really good drummer and lead guitarist to complement him, Simon, and Roger.

I went and got Disintegration today.

Damn fine album.  Bit odd hearing the Cure being all glossy and not drone-y, though.

One of the first bands i loved (in a time i didn't know nothing about music)... My father bought the Trilogy DVD and the rest is history...

My favorites:

1. Disintegration
2. Pornography
3. Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
4. The Head on the Door
5. Seventeen Seconds
6. Faith

Also, Join The Dots (B-Sides), Japanese Whispers, Trilogy (audio) and the bonus disc from Greatest Hits (With the acoustic versions) are great as well.

I quite like The Cure, altough I prefer bands like Bauhaus or Echo & the Bunnymen. Or The Sound. Or Comsat Angels. Or...

I really think the sequence Seventeen Seconds - Faith - Pornography are the best thing they have ever done. Disintegration is also very, very good. Can't stand Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me (well, there's Just Like Heaven, anyway), the self-titled album is quite weak, the last one is dreadful...

I saw them once, but it was a line-up without keyboards and the show was so-so.

It's sad Mr. Smith is not recording anything new - or planning to do. Since 1992 they have made 5 albums, and they are quite weak. Ok, there's some good songs in Wish, Wild Mood Swings and Bloodflowers, but comparing them to Pornography, Head on the Door or Disintegration is like comparing a Ferrari with a bicicle.

In short, a band with great musician, but the style overcame everything.

Ah, makes sense. I can see a bible belt being really anal about a guy in mascara and lipstick  :lol

I think part of the reason I was so attracted to them at an early age was because the look wasn't socially unacceptable in general. As I grew older I began to appreciate their music more and more. I'm a huge fan of the 80s goth scene--The Cure, Depeche Mode, Sisters of Mercy, New Order, Bauhaus, etc. I'm the only person my age I know who is  :P

All amazing music  :tup

I haven't mentioned, because The Church is way above anything else in this world. Few bands deserve to be mentioned in the same sentence as them.  :hefdaddy

I had some students who were into The Cure back in the 90's, and I ended up borrowing a bunch of their CDs.  The studio work was okay, but I was really blown away by the live stuff.  "show" and "sideshow" (I remember all the writing was in lower case letters) together fit nicely onto a C-90 cassette, which I still have.

Apparently the live stuff is not well regarded by actual Cure fans.  It figures.  It was what grabbed me the most.

I haven't heard ALL of The Cure's stuff.   But I've heard most of the major ones.

Seventeen Seconds
Pornography
The Head on the Door
Disintegration
Wish
Bloodflowers

Besides that I also own the "Staring at the Sea" singles collection....which is one of my favorites.

The only *really big* album I've never heard is KMKMKM....although I am especially curious about Faith and The Top.

My favorites are absolutely no contest.   Disintegration, Pornography and Bloodflowers....in that order.   And "Watching You Fall" is my all time favorite Cure song bar none.

Can't believe I don't own Trilogy yet...

This baffles me....

Pornography, Disintegration and Bloodflowers are considered to be a "trilogy" that are similar in feel and nature.   Those are my personal three favorite albums.

Liking Disintegration and not liking Pornography does not compute with me.   I would suggest "Staring at the Sea: The Singles"....or maybe "The Head on the Door"

Disintegration and Pornography are easily their best albums imo. After that I would put Kiss Me, Kiss Me, Kiss Me and Head on the Door. Faith, Seventeen Seconds, Wish and Bloodflowers are all pretty good as well. Debut album is not AS good, but I still think it's a pretty great and solid album, it's a lot of fun. Quality-wise it may not be one of their best, but it's a fun listening experience with some great songs. So far I haven't heard The Top, Wild Mood Swings or the latest two albums, but I'm gonna get through those as well.

Tentative album-ranking for me right now:

Disintegration
Pornography
Kiss Me Kiss Me Kiss Me
The Head on the Door
Wish
Faith
Seventeen Seconds
Bloodflowers
Three Imaginary Boys
