What's your muse?
« on: June 21, 2011, 09:29:25 PM »
Maybe it's just because I'm having trouble inspiring myself lately, but I was wondering what all the creative folks here turn to when they want to create but need a muse to get started?  Usually what does it for me is to be continually writing, but I've been on a writing hiatus for so long, it's gonna be difficult for me to get back on the wagon.

So what does it for all y'all?

I think about something for a long time. Such as a historical event, or an emotion. After about 5 to 10 minutes I just start writing. For some reason what I was thinking about comes out in music.

Being busy oddly enough.

When I'm bored and have nothing to do, I can't be creative worth a damn. But if I only have a minute free, I'll spend that minute writing my best stuff.

Speaking of music now... Sometimes, I'm inspired by recent events/observations in my personal environment. But I also often come up with stuff when I'm standing in front of my keyboard, going through the sounds and trying out stuff. It doesn't always work, but I'm content with what I'm coming up when it does.

Yep, same. I've been getting that lately.

I've just come back home, and while I'm really trying my hardest to make myself write over the last few days, I'm failing miserably. I've got nothing else to do, and I hate that I've just squandered 72 hours on chilling in my bedroom. I feel like I need to be doing something productive - I'm refusing to come downstairs and watch TV with the family, if my brother asks me to play video games with him I don't say "yes" 'cause it feels like I'm wasting time that I could be using to write something brilliant - but then I'll sit upstairs and write absolutely nada.

In general, though, I get my ideas in the shower. As I've got nothing else to do that requires a sliver of intellect, my mind tends to wander, which works pretty damn efficiently.

Yup, it had to be done, so dammit, I was gonna do it. :lol

I honestly don't know what my muse is. Music often inspires, but there are times I'm not at all inspired by it. Sometimes boredom gets me to do something exciting, and at other times it's being super busy that gets me to write something to escape it.

Music, definitely music. When it comes to writing characters they are usually influenced by the music I'm listening to. For example, Bat For Lashes has resulted in me writing a quiet, melancholy character, and A Perfect Circle a darker and crueller character. Once the characters are etched out I can normally write with whatever background music, but when it comes to drawing the characters I have to go back to the music that originally influenced them.

I think my main problem is that my shift towards realistic fiction has caused me to draw most of my ideas from real-life experiences, which is a blessing and a curse.  A blessing because I know exactly what to write and how in order to get the occurrence to come off the page, and a curse because it doesn't really allow me to branch out.  And because if anyone were to read it they'd know who they were.
