Mourning the Rancor, or "Why that man sad?"
« on: June 15, 2011, 01:15:29 PM »
So I was watching Return of the Jedi with my son last night, and we came to a part that I've wondered about pretty much my entire life.  So after Luke kills the Rancor, there's this big guy with a funny headdress and no shirt who seems all distraught, pushes people out of his way so he can run into the Rancor's pit and just seems really broken up over the fact that the Rancor is dead.  We see him crying and another of Jabba's minions consoling him.

I've always wondered- what's the story with this guy?  What was his relationship to the Rancor that has him crying over his loss?  Were they good friends, maybe relatives, pehaps something more (not that there's anything wrong with that)?  Nobody else in the palace seemed to react that way, sure there was alot of outrage but this guy was downright sad.  It's weird too because we get a few shots of this, so it seems odd that they would spend that much time showing us this guy's emotional reaction to the Rancor's death with no explanation as to who he is or why he's so bummed.  My son, who's 2, even asked me "Why that man sad?" and I didn't have an answer for him.  Anybody else ever wondered about this little scene?

That was always one of my favorite parts as a kid. I thought it was just supposed to be funny. The Rancor was a terrible monster, but it's owner did actually care about it.

Obviously those guys were the trainers or caretakers or whatever. I'm sure they didn't see the Rancor as a hideous beast, but as an intelligent creature with a personality.

Plus it's funny to see a shirtless fat man cry. :)

Just the guy that cared for the rancor and maybe trained him or something?

Wouldn't you be sad if your dog died, even though everyone else hated it because it ate babies?

Right on, so it's like a Hagrid/Aragog type of situation.  Makes sense!  :tup  Was there ever a toy for that sad fat guy?  I didn't remember one and that's where all of my knowledge of Star Wars background characters comes from :lol

They were close friends, actually.  There's a short story about it that's older than the prequels.  How am I the only one that knows this?  He was planning on escaping with it prior to Luke ending that dream.

edit: ...and to clear things up from earlier misconceptions in posts, Jabba owned both the rancor and the fat guy.  The fat guy was in charge of it but they grew close.

So here's a coincidence.  I was at the local library today during my lunch break, and they happened to have a glass case full of Star Wars memorabilia.  I take a look and what should I find but an action figure, still in it's packaging, of our mysterious crying Rancor friend.  His name?  "Rancor Keeper."   :lol

So I guess all of my questions have been answered now thanks to Yorost's post below- I was under the impression that Jabba owned everything/everyone in his palace which is why I didn't make the connection of the fat guy being the Rancor's keeper.  I figured Jabba was his keeper.  But oh well, you learn something new everyday!  So I guess a mod can lock this now if they want, unless you guys want to continue the discussion of Crying Fat Guy aka Rancor Keeper.

Did a little research. here he is in Bridget Jones (he's Fitzherbert)
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Kxrjqb534a0

He was also an auctioneer, apparently, in "The Phantom of the Opera." Can't find a video of that, though.
Listen! Do you smell something?

That's awesome dude!  The one I saw at the library was old school, from the original ROTJ set that must have come out back in '83 or so with the movie.  It had the thing in the corner talking about how you could send in 5 proofs of purchase and get a free Emperor action figure, which I totally did back in the day!  This is why I turn to DTF with pressing issues like this, I can always count on you guys to bring the knowledge!  :heart

That particular action figure is a favorite of the clearance isle.
Along with the singer from Jabba's palace.

That new song sequence has to be the low point of Lucas' revisions to the OT.  I mean at least Greedo shooting first is over in a split second.  This crap goes on for over a minute.  Even my 2 year old had a look on his face like "WTF is this?"

Im actually very pleased the films are being re-released in 3D in the theaters.
My boy will get to see them on the big screen.

What type of music would they be? I can see anything from Post Rock to Death Metal working really. :)

Funny because most of the new stuff was nice, but that was just so terrible.  Han vs Greedo was a stupid thing to change more than a bad change.  I'd actually forgotten about that one.

The short story about this guy and the Rancor is in Tales from Jabba's Palace, which is a really hit and miss book. I also have that action figure. They've made three figures of Malakili over the years, believe it or not.
WHOA, NICE GRAPHICS!

I must've been 8 at the most when I first saw ROTJ. I remember my reaction being the same.
