At (@) vs. In
« on: June 11, 2011, 10:33:23 AM »
I read a lot of people putting in twitter, facebook status or whatever that they are @NYC, @Lisbon, @Paris... but somehow, to me, it doesn't sound right. Something tells me that they should say that they are in New York City, in Lisbon or in Paris. Am I wrong? What's the rule here?

Isn't @location a type of tag?

# is for a hashmark that if you click it will show other people that have used it similarly, and is used for the trending topic things. @ is for people's names, so if you're talking to someone or mentioning them putting that with their name will send them the message too.

Using it on facebook on the other hand is a little ridiculous. Unless the message posts on both.

Oh, I know that. I'm talking in general. Forget that it's in facebook or twitter where you read these messages.

If you were to arrive to a different city and call someone and tell them you were in e.g. San Francisco, would you say:
A. Hey, I'm in San Francisco! Wanna hang out?
B Hey, I'm at San Francisco! Wanna hang out?

What I'm asking is that if in grammatical terms saying that you are at (@) X city is correct or not.

I've almost always heard in when referring to a city, but that could just be colloquial. I'm not sure if saying at is grammatically incorrect.

It would have a different meaning depending which site you're on. Like Pyroph said, on twitter @something means that you are talking to or about a specific person or account, like @TheYtseTimes. When you are talking about something more general you could use # like #DreamTheater so that anyone that wants to see what's being said about Dream Theater can just click on #DreamTheater and it'll bring up the list.

On facebook, you put @ in front of a person's name or a page that you like. the '@' will disappear in the actual message, but it will link to that person/page.

So to answer your question: People are idiots and that's not grammatically correct.

If it's a city, I say "In".
"At" is a word I use more if it's a sentence like: "I'm at a friend's house" or something.

You can't tag the city, anyway.

I hope!

I've always looked at it like this..

If you are in a city it is: "I'm in Toronto"
If you are in a building it is: "I'm in hotel X"
If you are just outside a building it is: "I'm at hotel X"
If you are on a street or intersection: " I'm at X street and Y street"
