46. Annihilator - Never, Neverland

If you're talking about thrash metal with anyone, the big 4 will always come up. Depending on how well-versed your friend is, Exodus, Testament, and maybe Overkill will come up. But, very few people have ever heard of Annihilator. This is an absolute atrocity, as Annihilator were releasing amazing albums that kick the shit out of what most of the bands were doing at the time. This album is definitely their high point. The riffs are heavy and speedy, the vocals soar and growl, the drums pound away. This is exactly what you want in a thrash metal band. While it may seem like I haven't listed any truly unique qualities to them, then it's probably because there really aren't any. They put a slightly altered spin on a mostly repetitive formula, and it just sounds fucking killer. There's also a song about macaroni and cheese. Seriously.

Recommended Tracks: The Fun Palace, Road to Ruin, Imperiled Eyes, Phantasmagoria

45. Buckethead - Colma

Buckethead is simply a genius. Any guitar virtuoso can shred with the best of them, and while Buckethead definitely excels in that regard, one of the most amazing things about this guy is his sense of melody. In this ambient offering, Buckethead exposes his softer side, and plays some truly beautiful music. The classical guitar feel of Big Sur Moon is often cited as one of Buckethead's greatest achievements, and must be heard to be believed. The rest of the songs all have at least one bone-chillingly soothing moment, and I'd call it one of the most soothing albums I know. Everyone needs to check out this guy's music, and especially this album.

Recommended Tracks: For Mom, Hills of Eternity, Big Sur Moon

44. The Cat Empire - So Many Nights

I will forever love Rich for getting me into these guys. For so long I had been waiting for a rock band that features trumpets in a dominant role, and I've finally found one. The trumpet player in this band is an absolute beast, and a pretty damn good singer as well. The lead singer (not the trumpet player) has a very "cool" voice. He just sounds very smooth in his vocal inflections. This is definitely music to dance too, even if you hate dancing. There's not really much else I can say about these guys. Just check them out.

Recommended Tracks: So Many Nights, Fishies, Sunny Moon, Til The Ocean Takes Us All
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

I never understood the Annihilator hype. They sounded like run-of-the-mill thrash metal to me. I'm surprised to see it ranked above Peace Sells, which is both classic and innovative.

Cat Empire sounds cool, though.

Out of curiosity, what have you heard from Annihilator? On the whole, they can get rather generic, but Never, Neverland is full of amazing songs that contain some very unique and innovative riffs, and the soloing rivals Chris Poland easily. It's no wonder that Jeff Waters (the guitarist) was in the running to join Megadeth before Rust in Peace.

I've heard all of Alice in Hell and and bits and pieces of Set the World on Fire. It wasn't bad, by any means--far from it--but nothing stood out to me, to be honest.

Yeah, listen to Neverland. It's their magnum opus, easily. Kicks the living shit out of both of those albums.

Glad to see Never, Neverland making this list. I mean, you introduced the album to me some time ago, so I'm not 100% shocked.

The Fun Palace has some of the coolest sounding guitar work in most thrash metal. Just sayin.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

43. Dream Theater - Images & Words

This album might seem a little low to some of you, but if anything, it's a sign that we're into some pretty legendary territory already. This album is highly respected among all Dream Theater fans (unless your name is Darkes7), and for damn good reason. This album is nothing short of a classic in every manner. It's littered with songs that would place on most DT fans top 10 lists, and it even contained the only mainstream hit. All the while, this album plays out like a crash course on how to make great progressive metal. The ambient textures are there, the riffs are there, the intricate melodies and first-rate musicianship are definitely there, and the vocals are some of the best in the genre. Prog fans, metal fans, and even regular music fans can find at least one song to enjoy on this masterwork.

Recommended tracks: Take the Time, Metropolis Pt. 1, Learning to Live

42. Black Sabbath - Black Sabbath

Most people have differing opinions for where metal truly started, but I've always considered this album to be the one that really nailed it. The opening track is built around the tritone, which gives a noticeably demonic sound. Any metal guitarist uses and abuses this whether he is aware of it or not. And they owe it all to Tony Iommi. Most of the songs on this album are decidedly bluesy, but this only serves to reinforce how closely related metal and blues really are. Once again, nobody can consider himself a metal fan until he's heard this album.

Recommended tracks: Black Sabbath, N.I.B.

41. Morbid Angel - Altars of Madness

Today, Morbid Angel is a bit of an insult to the death metal world with their hip-hop and techno experimentation, but back in the late 80s, they bridged the gap between the thrash-influenced death metal of Death and the more brutal death metal of bands like Cannibal Corpse. This album's influence can be felt in practically any death metal album released in the 90s. Trey Azagthoth and Pete Sandoval remain one of the most respected figures in death metal because of their relentless riffing and drumming, respectively. Specifically, Trey's soloing on this album seems like he was trying to make each part a little bit more chaotic than the next. This album is pretty difficult to follow unless you're paying close attention. It tends to just blur by. Chances are, if you like death metal, you've already heard this album quite a few times.

Recommended tracks: Maze of Torment, Chapel of Ghouls, Blasphemy
