I'm gonna say, I feel like this falls short of the last 2 albums. Especially the self-titled. Maybe I just need to give it more listens.

Even though I enjoy AAL, I find myself not really interested in going beyond the self-titled. (the only one I own)  Not sure why, they just don't seem like a group I would find interesting over multiple albums.

Possibly the best AAL riff or if not best riff ever written in my opinion!

Don't know why I haven't been listening to these guys earlier. It might be odd to start with the new album, but I'm digging it a lot.

Yeah, this is by far and away my favorite album of the year thus far. Not that I've had many others to compare it to but still, I have a feeling it'll be my favorite for a while.

I absolutely adore that soft section starting at 1:15 in Nephele, along with DAT CHURNNIN' ENDING.  :metal :yarr :heart

Other favorites right now are the more mellow and groovy Another Year and Para Mexer. Great album, so many layers.

^^^That^^^ so much! Glad I'm not the only one who is in love with that soft almost Hendrix-esque section in Nephele! And the ending  :metal

I saw this album in store and had heard of the name around here.  Never heard them before but checked out a couple of songs.  I think I will pick this up next week.

Definitely should, it's an amazingly diverse album from a band that (in my kingly, superior opinion) sits right in the middle of genre saturated with the same sound. I'm still pretty stunned by how much I love this album.

I second that, PROG, and Physical Education is equally as hypnotic in a completely different way. DEM TONES!

I kind of wish all of the tracks flowed into one another on this album, that would have made a pretty cool listening experience.

I like the mixing and sounds of this album. Not as good as self-titled but one of the best albums of the year for now. Gets the first place quite easily, poor music year, hopefully it will change.
My favourites are PE and maybe Another Year.
Do you even whahíbrido pickingant?

I just got a copy of their debut. It's awesome!
One doubt... I see people criticizing the drumming on that record. Is that a human being playing or is it just programmed stuff?
It sounds incredible to me!

The debut is 100% artificial drum machine.

Really? Shit! But they do have a drummer for the live shows, right? Can he play like that?!
[I suppose the debut is all Tosin then... A solo album.]

Yup they have a drummer.
The first album though was more of a "home produced" album by Tosin and Misha Mansoor. Misha programmed the drums.

So... the same thing happens in the other albums as well? Or Tosin put a band together? I haven´t listened to them yet.

In the next two albums, Tosin put a band together (a drummer and another guitarist).

I played it for my wife in the car and asked what she thought about it.

She said: "This is not music. It´s just noise!"  :rollin

Jesus Christ! I just started listening to Weightless. The drumming is insane!!!!!
I'm having drum classes for 2 months now and I'm already thinking about quitting!  ;D How can a human being play like that?!!! So fast and precise! It's Portnoy x 4!! The double bass technique is far from this earth!

AAL is the only band I know where the bass guitar is replaced by the double-bass of the drums.
If you have a kick-ass drummer with a good double-bass technique, a band does not need a bass player!

I'm listening to the last album now, Joy of Motion.
My first impression is that AAL is becoming less jazzy and more commercial. I might be wrong thou...

1. AAL debut - very complex, very jazzy, hard-listening
2. Weightless - not as complex as the debut, less jazzy, less hard-listening
3. Joy of Motion- not as complex as the second, even less jazzy, almost easy-listening

And the drums, on the last album, sound more human to me. I bet they used programmed drums in Weightless as well, mixed up with Navene's performance.

What do you guys think?

Just bought a ticket for the show in Amityville, NY, in a few weeks.  When they came to NYC a month or so ago, there was a terrible snowstorm and I'm sure many people didn't go.  The Amityville venue is much closer to me anyway.  So psyched!

Petrucci was in the crowd.  I noticed him and his wife after the show talking to someone toward the back of the venue.  Would've been awesome if he went on stage.  At one point between songs Tosin said that one of AAL's favorite bands came from Long Island.  Of course, I expected him to say Dream Theater.  He said Glassjaw.

Pretty excited for the show tonight. It'd be cool if the same merch lady was there from the last time when she gave me a free shirt for stage diving, during Wave of Babies
