They're pretty funny guys, in an immature kinda way.  Also I'm not a fan of the editing... its sort of purposely cheesey...

I want to get into Protest The Hero, what album should I get first?

in before debate

I say start with Kezia.  You can't go wrong with either album though.

Personally I started with Kezia, and really didnt like it that much. However, after time had passed and I forgot about the band, I heard this song and it rekindled my interest in them: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypCdGNe3Bvs

But eventually I got back into Kezia, so like others have said, you cant go wrong.

My friend has that DVD.  I need to borrow it from him.

I really wanted to get it. I'll have to keep an eye out

I love Turn Soonest to the Sea off of Kezia, try that.  Especially the outro... majestic.

So I just discovered this band yesterday.  I've heard about them on this forum for quite a while, and I asked my friend to give me a CD...so he gave me Fortress.  Just listened to it yesterday/today and....

HOLY SHIT THESE GUYS ARE AWESOME.  What an incredible band...normally I'm not a fan of really heavy/technical stuff like this, but for some reason, Protest the Hero is really defying the trend for me.  It's like the technical and heavy side of Fall of Troy, meets the harmonies and delicate treatment of melody of Muse, meets the insanity of Pain of Salvation...SO COOL.  So far, standouts for me are: Bloodmeat, Spoils and Bone Marrow.  But that's only on the first few listens through...I need to hear more to make a definite decision on favorite tracks.

I would never, ever call Pain of Salvation 'insane', but good looks on discovering the band. Get Kezia.

You have to admit, PoS's stuff is pretty crazy...I had no clue what was going on the first time I listened to The Perfect Element I, it hits you like a ton of bricks.

I see it as very different from Protest's stuff. Protest is pretty much constant holyfuckenergy.

So, in the string of dates they are playing over Christmans break in Canada, they're playing Fortress in its entirety.  Which means:  BONE MARROW.

Just came back from seeing them, the show was fucking awesome.

They played:

Bloodmeat
Dissentience
Bone Marrow
etc
Goddess Bound
======
Turn Soonest to the Sea
Blindfolds Aside

Two of the opening acts were pretty good, but Abandon All Ships was possibly one of the worst bands I have heard in my entire life. It was pretty disgusting that they had a bigger pit than the bands before them.

Bone Marrow was awesome, very fun live song, the mellow bits acted as a great sort of singalong.

Turn Soonest to the Sea was like I expected: totally awesome, lots of crowd energy, lots of participation during the singalong bit. They were pretty lax as far as letting people up on stage, a few times Rody let people who got on stage sing lines. Unsurprisingly at TSttS most of the people getting on stage were women.

My only complaint is that they didn't do the keyboard solo from Limb from Limb, despite having a keyboard up on stage. They only used it for one of the piano interludes.

Man, this has been bothering me for ages now:

What is actually being said at the very start of No Stars Over Bethlehem? As in, when the song is doing that big build up and something is screamed?

It doesn't seem to be in the lyrics booklet.

Maybe I need to hear more, but I've heard two of their songs and while I really like the instrumental part - they're absolutely amazing that way - I have some problems with the vocals. It's ok when he actually sings, but when he enters the sort of whiny voice or screaming, it grows really tiresome. Any song recommendations? (The ones I've heard were apparently Bloodmeat and Sequoia Throne)

I loved Rody's voice from the moment I heard it, its just so epic and versatile.  Its weird how its the stumbling point for most people when it comes to getting into the band.
