I like it well enough, but it never really hit me like this album did.

Protest kicked ass last night. It was at a small place but the energy rocked.

This album needs to be discussed more.  And why has Yellow Teeth not even been mentioned?
SO.
GOOD.

Great album. The lyrics are way more personal than they were on Fortress, and I think it actually fits the musical style better. I haven't heard Scurrilous, is that album the same way?

Scurrilous doesn't really have any harsh vocals and overall is their worst IMO. Just nothing on it is really as interesting as Volition, Fortress or Kezia. A few good songs I guess.

Scurrilous is probably their best IMO, alongside Volition I would say. And yes there are still harsh vocals, just not quite so many of them. I've never understood that complaint. Melodically the album is just incredible though.

I'm gonna revisit Scurrilous, because it was the first PtH album I heard, and it was just really offputting when I heard it. I remember finding parts of it really jarring, and mostly it was the clean vocals not just working very well with the music. Some of the songs came off as overly cheesy. After getting into Volition and Fortress, two albums with more harsh vocals, I've really started to love the band, and I think I would appreciate Scurrilous more at this point, but I also feel like the harsh vocals is a great part of their sound, and even if they don't have it in every song, it's still there. So the fact that it's less of that on Scurrilous makes me a bit sad.

I think the bassist used to write most of (or all?) of the lyrics prior to scurrilous, at which point rody has kinda taken over.

Arif (their bassist) wrote the first album's lyrics (Kezia), but since then has just done a few songs on each album, although he didn't do any for Volition

I mean, what Duncan said.

(I was certain Arif had done the majority of Fortress, but I lack the confidence to stand behind that answer.)

You're right, I was mistaken, Arif wrote Fortress too....

Haven't been on this forum in a while but had to stop by and say that this album was the best one released last year. The lyrics since the frontman took over the writing have been so much better and emotional than the albums before. Skies is the best song on the album but honestly that changes every time I listen to this album. So many catchy parts and they need the girl to just be a part of the band and sing on every track. I honestly can't stress enough how much better and how much they have progressed since Fortress which imo was pretty average.

I just bought Kezia on CD and my disc seems weird. It is not recognized by the AccurateRip database and appears to have strange silence between tracks that wasn't intended by the band.

For example, the songs "The divine Suicide of K." and "A Plateful of our Dead" sound like they're intended to segue into one another, but on my disc there are some seconds of dead-silence between them. It sounds off-putting.
Can someone check his version of the album whether it's the same? AccurateRip not recognizing the disc could indicate that I got some "misprint".

My copy has that too albeit I've =never paid it that much mind because it doesn't really get in the way of the album too terribly much. If I wasn't so lazy I suppose I could go cut the silence off the end of the track in audacity and you probably could do the same if you really wanted to, so.

Anyways the real reason I checked and found this thread was to talk about Volition because my thoughts on in are definitely in order enough by now.
Clarity I liked a lot at first but kind of have grown tired of it, it's not a bad song though.
Drumhead Trial has a lot of energy I love to bits, the main "riff" that starts off the song is one of my favorites on the album too. Also that solo trade-off section <3 Really I just love everything about this song, probably my 3rd favorite on the album.
Tilting Against Windmills has a lot of parts I like and some I'm just meh on, but overall it's a rather enjoyable track.
Without Prejudice... dunno why but I always feel Rody's singing isn't very dynamic here, especially the "so drape yourself..." part until the tempo change. But the entire slower section at the end is godly and I like the music in this song a lot even if the vocals irk me a little.
Yellow Teeth is great too, and in stark contrast to the previous track the vocals are probably the main selling point of it for me, though really there's nothing I can say negative about this one either.
Plato's Tripartite I like as a whole, but the entire tempo-change-out-of-nowhere section just feels tacked on, like it's only there because this is about their simplest song otherwise... but I think it should've stayed that way. They needed something there, but what they put there wasn't right. Oh also the rest of the song is pretty wonderful though, I'm a sucker for 6/8 though.
A Life Embossed has a lot of riffs I like and the entire ending section is a great moment but the song feels like it drags on a bit for me. Could've been trimmed a bit and made a much more enjoyable track.
Mist is just so energetic and powerful that I can't help but love it, even if the lyrics I can only connect with a little. It's just such a passionate song and that really sells it for me. Also helps that the piano/guitar duet at the end foreshadows Skies a little which is always a good thing to do, yes.
Underbite I only really have one negative thing to say about, and that's that it might be a bit *too* tongue-in-cheek at times. But a very fun song as a whole regardless.
Animal Bones is just... not memorable aside from the Sequoia Throne reprise, at least I can't find it to be such. It's not bad at all but it doesn't really do anything interesting for me.
On the other hand Skies is the best song on the album by a good margin and easily the band's best song since I have tried to find something to nitpick at to no avail. It's just... flawlessly brilliant. I still haven't gotten over how great this song is yet.
The album as a whole I'd probably rank about the same as or just above Kezia, Scurrilous is still probably my favorite release but Volition is pretty damn good regardless.

Also song rankings because, because.
Skies
Mist
Drumhead Trial
Yellow Teeth
Underbite
Plato's Tripartite
Tilting Against Windmills
A Life Embossed
Without Prejudice
Clarity
Animal Bones

Do like all the songs though, so that's 2 albums in a row with no songs I dislike.

There's way too many amazing songs on Volition. The weaker songs on the list are pretty much only there because I'm not overly fond of the lyrics. The lyrics on this album range from extremely poignant and beautiful to cringe-worthy with very little warning. Plato being a prime example of the former.

Plato's Tripartite
Drumhead Trial
Yellow Teeth
Tilting Against Windmills
Skies
Without Prejudice
Mist
Clarity
Animal Bones
Underbite
A Life Embossed
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

A Life Embossed is pretty dumb, and the whole "rock n roll facade" thing that Underbite has just feels like it's been done to death already. Honestly, Tilting Against Windmills is largely inoffensive. The "father forgive us" section is also one of the most epic things ever.

The harsh vocals and neo-classical bits in the chorus are the key redeeming factors.

what the hell is the chorus of any PtH song by the way? I have no clue what the "chorus" of A Life Embossed is.
I guess Yellow Teeth, Plato's Tripartite, and Skies all have pretty obvious choruses but the rest of the songs on the album I can't really think of anything

 :sadpanda: From the band's Facebook...

"The cat's out of the bag. Despite what you may of read already, here's the real scoop:

Arif has decided that the touring schedule we have signed up for to support Volition is more intense than what he is prepared to commit. He is actively involved with other projects at home and being a full time band member isn't a practical thing. Though he has and will be missed out on the road with his brothers, everything was left on a positive note and we are open to his involvement down the road and only time will see how it all plays out. In the meantime, our longtime friend and tourmate Cam McLellan will be filling in on bass duties for the rest of the cycle. As an amazing musician, co-writer and producer of Volition, he is more than capable to pick off where Riffy left off. Don't fret, Cam's working on his giant happy smile and well placed high kicks during our set!"
