Volition is pretty kick ass!

Great album. I'm already liking it better than Scurrilous. My standouts so far are Drumhead Trial, Mist, Animal Bones, and Clarity.

Got my download code this morning, so have been listening all morning, it's really good. It was a bit too much to take in on first listen, but second listen I really dug it a lot. Not sure I'll like it as much as Scurrilous, but definitely at least on a par with Fortress.

Shame that I discovered the band after the IGG campaign was over. Can someone who followed it shed some light on the editions and album covers? What versions can I expect to show up at my local record store?

This album is soooo much better than Scurrilous. The experimental elements and the return of screaming in an amazing way (dat A Life Embossed) push it over the top. This band rules.

Mist is probably the best song they've made!

So I'm about through the album, it's pretty good, but it's not really that great stacked against other releases from this year. It'll definitely get some more listens, but yeah..  :-\

This album is really great. Still not as good as Fortress (yet) but it obviously require more listens than the ~2 I've given it.
I only listen to electro-post dubprog.  You've probably never heard of it.

well Sequoia Throne is fantastic, the two Goddess songs are pretty great too, and Wretch and Bloodmeat I also dig, the rest honestly tend to be fairly forgettable compared to the rest of their discography for me.
then again I also like Scurrilous the best of their albums (just barely, but!)
so maybe I'm just bad as a PtH fan lol

Man, I love this album so much. Skies is just a beautiful song to end the album with. Rody's vocals are so good on this.

Tried listening a few more times today, but it bored me immensely, and I found myself going to other recent releases.
Definitely disappointed now, was expecting a lot more from the guys.

Here's my biggest gripe so far, may edit this post later with more:

- Unlike bands like Skeletonwitch, High On Fire, Converge, etc that have a very rock steady sound, they still manage to make each new album have it's own complete identity that feels brand spanking new each time; but with Volition, it feels like I've heard this exact album from them before. And in the end I just feel like I could just pop on Fortress or Kezia. Death Angel's most recent fell into this pit trap, it's good, but it's like a regurgitated Relentless Retribution, which I already have, so why would I want another album of the same?

- None of the songs feel like they really have their own identity whatsoever.

...
No, I just put potatoes up to my ears and enjoyed how they felt. Yes I listened to Mist, and I honestly don't hear anything great about it at all.
Sure the musicianship is tight and the riffage is blistering, but like I said above, it feels like I've heard it all before, nothing about it is unique to me in any way.

idk dude Protest doesn't often do major keys nor do they do extended acoustic passages or impassioned vocals atop beautiful sweeping guitar melodies

it's a pretty unique song for them

...but if you don't like it that's your prerogative man, I'm gonna keep jammin Plato's Tripartite over here.

Listening to Fortress and Scurrilous last night really sealed my opinion on this album; oh well, I seem to be an extremely small minority, so it looks like PtH will be just fine.
