here i thought the lack of growls/screams had something to do with them going for a grammy. rather, rody claims screams woulda done the album an injustice. the more i know (or am lead to believe).

So, all I had heard of PtH was the song that Joe sent me in my roulette. On my first full listen of Fortress now.

That, and also it's brutal like a punch in the face. In the best possible sense.

To be honest, I think Scurrilous is their best album. I just can't stop listening to it.

I've listened to it 104 times, and I'm still not sure if I like it or not. All I can say is that when this album clicks it's gonna blow my cock off.

Indeed. I enjoyed it throughout! The guitars compliment everything and so do the vocals.

I am a complete noob to them and can't access music or vids here at work...I heard a song on a college radio station driving home the other night that absolutely blew me away...the vocals were clean throughout the song, is this the norm for them I have a real hard time with growls ( I know flame shield is up) other than Opeth or a song here or there it just doesn't click with me

About a third of the vocals on Fortress were screaming/growling, can't remember how much there was on the first album. But on the new record, theres zero screaming about from like, three lines throughout the whole album.

I listened to the new album today for the first time, my first experience of this band.
It was alright I guess, nothing that blew my mind, but still interesting enough to keep my interest.
Nothing really stood out on the first listen, but I'll spin it 2-3 times more in the next days, and see what changes. :P

Just listened to Scurrilous for the first time.

First impressions: Solid album. Not quite as good as Kezia, definitely better than Fortress. Has a lot of potential to grow on me. First time through my favorite track so far is Dunsel.

A couple of listens through Scurrilous and I am really enjoying it.

Couldn't disagree more with this comment:

I like it, but it does kinda start strong and then lets off.

Termites and sex tape are two of the best songs on it for me and Dunsel is also great.

Also, I do agree that it seem like the awesome moments don't last long enough but I think that is also one of PTH's greatest strengths. All their songs leave you unsatisfied the first few times. It's about 10-15 listens before the songs make sense.

This album is easily growing, I'd say the 'toughest' part for me to adjust to is the singing.
Not implying that it's bad or anything like that, but it's really... different from what I had expected or what I normally listen to, so yeah.. takes some time. :P
A lot of the songs you mentioned are great though, the riffs on this album are crazeh.

Dunsel, Sex Tapes, Tandem, Moonlight and Tongue-Splitter are my favorite tracks so far, I think. It's their weakest to me, but still very solid.

Listened to the new album now as it's up on Spotify, and I really dig it. I have no idea why people are talking about being a departure, to me the style is almost exactly the same, the only difference being less screams, but I really can't see why that would ever be a problem.

One of the things I love so much about the first two albums in the variation in vocals. Rody is an extremely talented and diverse vocalist and it sucks that they aren't putting him to proper use on the new album.

There are still some harsh vocals, they're just not used as much. It's funny that literally the tiniest change in style is prompting such dislike. :lol

Rody said himself he only screams when it feels benificial to the song, and that he felt there were fewer of those moments on this than on Zezia or Fortress. I'd rather it be based on something logical like that rather than forcing screams into the album or consciously not using them.

Exactly. People complained about Opeth's Watershed having less growls, but less of the music called for growls. It's such a bizarrely arbitrary way to judge an album.

I agree except with Porcelain Heart.

Scurrilous however, is perfectly tactile with it's growling. Yeah I wouldn't mind more moments of it, but when you listen to the material that is there, you can't really complain.

My least favourite tracks are Hair-Trigger and Tandem, what about other people? The ending is Hair-Trigger is awesome, but the rest is just eh.

Moonlight, it's the only track that hasn't clicked. I just find it kind of uninspired compared to the rest of the songs.

Favourites have to be Termites and Dunsel, by FAR.
