I just don't understand how anyone can think Crack the Skye is their worst album... just... no.

I would consider Remission to be their weakest album. Plenty of good songs but some of the riffs just seem a bit disjointed.

Look I love progressive music and I love heavy music, and I'm all for bands exploring new sounds and evolving, but it really is as simple as this: I prefer Mastodon's heavy music to their progressive music. Therefore I prefer their heavier albums to the progressive albums. Yes Crack The Skye is more diverse and more listenable, but I simply would rather listen to them being loud and aggressive and intense. *shrug*

I know what you mean. For me CTS is my 2nd favorite with Leviathan & Blood Mountain tied for first.
I love Remission but it seems a bit sloppy compared to the tightness of following albums.

That being said, This new album seems to be coming along in the loud, aggressive & intense vein based on what the band has said in the interviews.
I say bring it!

I agree about the sloppiness, but for me that is part of the charm of Remission, and also their b-sides and EPs. Obviously there are some bands to whom precision and tightness are paramount, DT being the obvious but also most of the new wave of Djent and Metalcore bands, but there are also bands who don't worry about that and care only about the intensity of the delivery, bands like Converge and Car Bomb and indeed early Mastodon. Yes the record may not be completely tight and flawless, but the energy behind the music might be dampened by over-producing it.

The issue of overproduction is one of my gripes with CTS compared to their previous work. Sounds too clean compared to the previous three records.

I simply just don't care for CTS.  Mastodon for me was Remission, Leviathan and Blood Mountain, IMHO, CTS was just terrible. *puts up flame shield*

I think the band expected there to be some fans that would hate it. Have to give them credit for being so ambitious though, right?

I think CTS is something the band felt they had to do for themselves, A sort of musical catharsis. Troy Sanders said in an interview that for them it was like "stepping out of their aeroshells" or something. It also was the band's way of reflecting upon the near loss of Brent Hinds.

Brann Dailor considers it a homage to his sister, Skye, who commited suicide at a young age.

The new album should see a return to the more heavy riff oriented side of the band.

As long as it's more Leviathan than Blood Mountain, I'll be happy.

That's because Blood Mountain sucks. :neverusethis:

Seeing as the band's first 3 albums have a very high shit riff to good riff ratio I'm a little worried.

But "Megalodon" came out of that period, which has some of my favorite heavy riffs ever, and it singlehandedly makes up for the low points of Blood Mountain and most of Remission.  I have faith in them.

I rate Crack the Skye as their best by quite a margin, followed by Blood Mountain.

Ofcouse, these are the only two Mastodon albums I own...so that kind of makes sense.

Based on what is on Blood Mountain, and the discussion of others in this thread, I think CTS will be a one-off. It appeals to such a narrow base of fans (again, from what I've read), I can't see them going down that road again. Shame really.
I punch those numbers into my calculator and they make a happy face.

Honestly, I think that Blood Mountain ties up with CTS for me, with Leviathan being just .5% lower.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Leviathon
Remission
Call of Mastodon / Lifesblood / Sick Leg
Blood Mountain
Crack The Skye

....what the fuck?

There is certainly nothing wrong with that ranking.

Besides one of the greatest metal albums ever (behind Addicted and I&W for me) being ranked last and putting Blood Mountain below Remission.

Lateralus
Addicted
Decon
I&W
Still Life
SFAM
CTS

:tup It's exactly how I got into the band as well. I had read about them and thought their style sounded interesting, so I ended up buying the record without once having listened to any of their music.

I 'started' on Mastodon with Blood Mountain, but I didn't really like it much. I gave them another chance when I heard a song from CTS and I'm happy I did. I love CTS and Leviathan.

I listened to Blood Mountain again a few months ago and although it was better than I remember, my opinion stands that it's very hit or miss.

The problem with Blood Mountain is that there really isn't a standout track.

I'd agree with this pretty much. I think it's a pretty cool album, but there's not a go-to song on it for me.

Been listening to Leviathan in my car on repeat and I really love the raw energy of the album. There's three or four tracks that are absolutely solid but the album as a whole doesn't quite pass Crack The Skye yet.

No word yet on a release date but they seem to be shooting for August/September

The album recording is done, all that's left is mixing & mastering.
