The Mastodon Thread v. Emperor of Sand!
« on: May 23, 2011, 08:15:42 PM »
Just wanted to make a Mastodon appreciation thread. I'm sure there must fans of the 'Don here on DTF!  :tup

Also, As of April 26, 2011, The boys have been in the studio recording the follow up to Crack The Skye.

Here's the links to some interviews regarding the new material

Also, two song titles have been released, Blasteroids & All The Heavy Lifting.

So, Mastodon. Discuss  :metal

Oh man...unlikely they'll get it out in time for 2011, but if they do it'll be another addition to all the great music coming out.  Definitely one of modern metal's greatest bands.  Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and CTS are all amazing.

The band is pretty adamant on getting the record out this year so If they can get the recording done before their summer tours start, I don't see why they can't make it.

Let's see what happens!  :corn

Awesome, I figured another album was due soon. :metal :metal :metal

 This time around, the music is being written as more of a collaboratrive effort amongst the band, Unlike Crack The Skye which was predominantly written by Brent Hinds.

It's gonna be killer!  :metal

Also a question to all posters, How would you rank their albums in order of preference?

So many great bands bringing out new albums this year, hopefully Mastodon get their's out too  :metal Although that might mean theres a dearth of good stuff coming out next year  ;D

I didn't really get in to them until Crack the Skye came out, it's much more my type of album than their other work - though some of the old songs are cool too.

Saw them in Glasgow last year when they played CTS in full  :metal

Saw them in Chicago and they played CtS in its entirety and then worked backwards through all of their albums.  :metal Then I met Bill and Brent after the show and they signed my CtS copy (Bill wrote "To Steve - You're gay!!") lol

It was stated that the new album would be "less proggy with more straightforward riffs" by one of the band members. Not so sure about that one.

As long as the production isn't shot to shit like the other albums, I'll probably pick it up.

You mean Remission and Leviathan?

I think Blood Mountain has their best production with Crack The Skye being a bit compressed in comparison.

Really? I must have a bad version of Blood Mountain, because mine sounds awful, and I mean really awful, not just "DM" bad.

As bad as DM?

Here's the studio recording of Crystal Skull. Does this sound the same?

After getting extremely acquainted with Blood Mountain and Leviathan, I don't see what the issue is with the production. It sounds fine to me.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

Some people may take issue with the crunchy sound of Leviathan relative to their newer work but I think it's still top notch.

I always get shot down for the way I rank Mastodon albums but bleh, here goes anyway

Leviathon
Remission
Call of Mastodon / Lifesblood / Sick Leg
Blood Mountain
Crack The Skye

Looking forward to see whether they continue mellowing out on the new album or whether they embrace their heavy roots. I know at least some of the reason for the more restrained style on CTS was the injury to Brent, but he seems to be better now so the decision is in their own hands.

Besides one of the greatest metal albums ever (behind Addicted and I&W for me) being ranked last and putting Blood Mountain below Remission.
