Once More 'Round The Sun and especially The Hunter definitely aren't bad, but I wouldn't call them great either. I just can't get into the 'funny' cartoonized tracks like Curl of the Burl. They're groovy on first listen but wear out pretty quickly.

It's a heavy subject matter indeed, but it seems they're always onto something music-wise when writing about serious topics. It brings out the best and most honest in Mastodon.

They wrote The Hunter to be just a collection of songs because they were tired at that point of doing concept albums.

Crack The Skye is probably their best album but I also LOVE The Hunter because it's their one album that's not 100% serious and you can tell they just had fun making it as a result.

I'm glad they're not one of those po-faced super serious dressed all in black at all times and NEVER smiling in photos kinds of band...

Just Pre - Ordered " Emperor Of Sand " VINYL  :corn :corn

But from Amazon where it's literally just the record and no extras for £27.

The SE Vinyl from Mastodon's website is £40. But too much for me.

Love how punchy Sultan's Curse is.

Also I keep wanting to Say " THE Emperor Of Sand " . I like the title but feels like there's a word missing.

That or " Emperor Of THE Sand "... Just me being super picky though :p

Although I do understand the expression " Empire Built On Sand " and also that Sand = Time.

I actually think the title sounds slightly more poetic without a the in it, the emperor makes it sounds more specific or something  :P

I want the vinyl but the Vinyl on it's own is £30 - which is rather a lot.

Yeah I only saw that after my post - I hope I can get it somewhere for less than that...

Got it on Amazon for £27. Which means if the price drops between now and March 31st I get the lower price but it also means that if the price goes up by March 31st I don't pay any extra.

Yeah Emperor of Sand sounds like it refers to the situation as much as the protagonist.

So. It turns out - the EP that was originally supposed to follow Once More Round The Sun -

- Brent is putting it out as a solo album for RSD 2017. :)

Help me out? I wasn't aware of the EP, and this news. Linkage? :)

>>>Also, I've been looking around at various metal communities...it's weird. A lot of metal fans really think the band sold out with CTS, The Hunter, and OMRTS. I disagree, obviously. I've used this analogy before (and because I always bring things back to the band I am familiar the most with, the original lineup of Queensryche), but Mastodon's trajectory reminds me a lot of the original QR lineup's.

Blood Mountain is Mastodon's version of Rage for Order -- a mix of the past, some new, some experimental, a gem that diehards all love, even if it didn't get the notoriety of their most famous work.

Crack the Skye is Mastodon's Operation Mindcrime -- put the band on the map with mainstream, regarded by most fans as their best work, with some diehard metal fans disagreeing, but generally considered the first big milestone in the band's career, and an epic that really brought out the great chemistry and writing abilities in the and.

The Hunter is Mastodon's Empire -- an attempt at breaking the themeatic/conceptual pattern, and appealing to a wider audience. Got a lot of press and did well.

The comparison ends there, as well, Once More Around the Sun continues that same trend, whereas Queensryche pretty much distanced themselves from what was expected with Promised Land, going anti-commercial (great dark and introspective record though).

Needless to say, I really enjoy Once More Around the Sun, and have enjoyed the first track from Emperor. (I am not listening further -- waiting for the record). I can't wait. I pre-ordered it the other day. Great band.

I think old school fans find the new stuff too polished and commercial sounding.

Metal heads just want Drop B and screaming at 290 BPM for every song.....

I hate reading things like " Yo when are you gonna go back to Remission style ?  :metal :metal "

Um...never ?

Mastodon have more influences than just metal.

I'd compare their trajectory to Metallica. Just without the blockbuster selling definitive album ( yet ).

Remission and Kill Em All are both raw debuts

Leviathan and Ride are the more polished more mature follow up

Blood Mountain and Master are the third album where they really hit their stride

Crack The Skye and Justice are the complex 4th album.

Hunter and Metallica are the more commercial more concise 5th album

OMRTS & Load aren't really analogous I guess.

Brent is the man. I love interviews like this where someone is just fucking with the interviewer  :lol

At this point I don't think Brent has a sober base level. He's one of those guys that has taken enough to be destined to view the world in a way unlike the rest of us. He's funny as shit though, I love him  :heart

Thanks for the link.

In regard to the band's progression, and the old school sound, to be honest, I don't like Remission or Call of the Mastodon at all. The vocals are so off-putting. I can stomach Leviathan better, and it is interesting, lyrically, obviously. But I never reach for the first two albums. I've listened to them both twice. That's it. Just too hard to listen to. To me, they started to really find their sound on Leviathan, and obviously, with Blood Mtn. and CTS.

But different tastes/strokes, etc., I guess. I'm really glad they evolved the way they have.

The Metallica comparison could be on too. But unlike Metallica (who really lost me when they made the big shift with the Black album -- thrash bands for me are a different animal entirely, and as a fan, I have a hard time when they go too commercial), I really embraced Mastodon's shift.

A possible leak ?

Pretty good. They're whining on the Metallica boards that it's too commercial and happy.

I think it's catchy.

Show Yourself isn't a million miles away from Blasteroid or Once More Round The Sun.

They do have more upbeat songs here and there...

I can see it now though... A year from now it'll be " Hope the next album is more like Remission and less poppy like Emperor of Bland LOL ".

" Emperor Of CASH - the sellout album ".

:lolpalm:

Totally agree. Sultan's Curse didn't really stick out to me that much because it sounded a lot like Mastodon's earlier songs (a little too much imo), but this is something I can get behind.  :metal (okay, maybe that's the wrong emote but I digress)

Well I liked it. I did prefer Sultan's Curse but this was cool too. I like everything Mastodon have done though so it's hardly surprising. Some albums have been a bit of a disappointment in the past but I've grown to appreciate and enjoy every album. Just been listening to these guys loads in anticipation.

Reading the Youtube comments is a ridiculous exercise  :lol I'm so glad the sort of comments on there wouldn't be tolerated here.

Wow, that was unexpected, so I won't comment straight up.  All I will say is that I appreciate how much this band experiments and reinvents themselves.  I'm a Leviathan and Remission fan, but am open to whatever they choose to do.
