Yep, love Sultan's Curse and the "new" sound. I wasn't one of the ones that hated OMRTS' production, but I definitely prefer the cleaner, less muddled style.

Overall I do like the artwork despite being the opposite of what we were just talking about loving.  :lol I do think change is nice and this is definitely a departure while still being really nice artwork in general. I'm okay with the metal vibe given that it looks like actual artwork and something I'd see in a Dante's Inferno piece, which is really fucking awesome.

Soooo ready for thiiiiis!

RIP DTP.

The track times for the whole album are up already. I'm surprised.

It's a double vinyl so must be a lengthy album ?

Although OMRTS was also a double vinyl and that's not a massively long album.

Emperor Of Sand is a cool title but I keep wanting to call it Emperor Of THE Sand. I just like that cadence more.

Where? Can you post them?

:rollin. Part 1 and it's 6 minutes.

It's already longer than the entire Making of for THE HUNTER.  I love the band but that was a huge let down. Especially since Crack The Skye was NINETY minutes.

Thanks all. The track lengths aren't surprising to me. They have really started maturing as songwriters, and apparently embraced a we can still be proggy, but not have gargantuan tracks take this time out. I look forward to it.

And thanks for posting the link to the making of. Will watch!

Actually pre-ordered the album right after seeing the making of video. Very psyched about it and Sultan's Curse is fantastic.

Ohhh, this is great. Album art looks amazing, and the making of video was great. I haven't heard the new song in full yet, but the snippets from the making of video were awesome. Definitely gonna preorder the vinyl.

I want the vinyl but the Vinyl on it's own is Ŗ30 - which is rather a lot.

And I think it's not their best artwork. Even though I do love Orange as a colour.

Still better than anything Slayer have ever done or will ever do.

We get it. You don't like Slayer.

Is there a reason you keep bringing them up in unrelated situations that have nothing to do with them?

How is Slayer relevant here? And also, beauty is in the eye of beholder, there are probably people who like some of Slayer's art better. For example, I love artwork on Seasons in the Abyss.

Yep, so cool. As someone already said, they all seem very emotional about it, putting everything they got into this album.

I think there would be less of an argument if your opinion was based on Show No Mercy (even if it is completely irrelevant and this was when the band were very young, it was their debut and it was of its era)

but not of Reign in Blood. I don't think it's goal is to be brutal or 'true metal'. I think it is just a very dark piece of art and I personally love it.

Haha it looks like he caught his cape on the logo and had to pull out one of the swords to free himself. . .

>:( Oh ffs - take THAT tunic Yeah ! Show no Mercy !!!! "

p.s. I'm mostly on about the way Slayer present themselves. They seem so desperate to be Metal and Controversial.

it's just comical to me.

Sultan's Curse is punchy as hell.

So glad they went back to Brendan O Brien. Never been a fan of Raskuilnecz. ??

Once more Round The Sun was like a tiny tiny dent in the armour.

There's nothing surprising about the song lengths. They match up the previous two albums perfectly.

I second the Brandon 'O Brien (don't know if I'm spelling correctly) thing. I can hear that Crack the Skye sound in the layering of instruments again and it's great. Still, this is a lot more streamlined than Crack the Skye was, which I think is a good thing. And vocally all three of the guys are absolutely killing it. Everyone is sounding better than ever, and I have to pick Brent Hinds as my favorite. The way the song transitions into his part just feels so infectious.

Yeah it's like Oblivion the way their three vocal parts weave in and out.

The idea of another Crack The Skye level album is exciting...

Apparently they wrote "Once More Round The Sun" for over a year - which is a shame when the production is not up to their usual standard.

I mean - it doesn't sound "bad" at all. I think that - after listening to Sultan's Curse - I think Once More Round The Sun just lacks any punch.

Once More 'Round The Sun and especially The Hunter definitely aren't bad, but I wouldn't call them great either. I just can't get into the 'funny' cartoonized tracks like Curl of the Burl. They're groovy on first listen but wear out pretty quickly.

It's a heavy subject matter indeed, but it seems they're always onto something music-wise when writing about serious topics. It brings out the best and most honest in Mastodon.

I don't see how they would be desperate or trying to be metal when they are one of the pioneers in the genre and have a cult like fanbase.  They aren't really trying to prove anything.  RIB is also an absolute thrash classic, brilliant album.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

Out of curiosity, would anyone here be interested in possibly starting up a thread for Top 25 Mastodon Songs? We all take turns counting down our favorite songs from the guys in prep for the new album- or should we wait until Emperor of Sand is out and add that into the running too?

That's fine, I'd need to make a list too. I'm just asking around now to see what sort of interest there'd be around here for that. :tup
