Yeah I'm digging it! Gets a bit samey by the end, but some really cool songs.

Tread Lightly is an awesome opener and Diamonds In The Witch House is a great closer up there with Heart's Alive.

Motherload has a stunning chorus and there are great moments throughout the album.

Been listening to Mastodon a lot lately due to the upcoming release of the new album, and finally Leviathan really clicked. Such a badass album :metal :metal :metal :metal

Too bad they didn't hold on to the mastering style of Leviathan. Again, this new record is just a flat line in terms of dynamics. No wonder it gets samey after a while. Play some Led Zeppelin after this and it'll sound heavier because it actually has punch even though it's not as 'heavy'.

Raskulinecz albums always sounds bad with the possible exception of Shogun.

One by One by Foo Fighters sounded pretty bad. Wasn't that his first album as a producer ?

I was a fan of his work on AIC's Black Gives Way To Blue and Deftones' Diamond Eyes particularly... I get what some are saying here with the dynamic sound but I almost want to say the sound on this album is a stylistic decision by the band... just the way it feels to me. Halloween is a good example of the sound being a little strange but kind of cool at the same time as if the band meant for it to be that way and there are a couple others where I get that same vibe. Could be wrong though but eh...

Picked up the cd yesterday and just had my first listen.  It's pretty damn nice, but the songs towards the back end need more listens.  The first three tracks are superb.  The Motherload is incredible, Brann is carving it up here.

Much better than The Hunter already.

Ever had one of those albums that you love every *other* time you listen to it..?

Like - Oh man this album is awesome. Next time - yeah it's ok I guess. Next Time - nah it's great. ( etc )

Really annoying. But on the whole great. Not disappointing in any way  - just need to get used to it I think.

Far too early to rank but atm - a mid tier album. The only album along with BM that I didn't completely love instantly.

Mastodon are an odd one for me. I absolutely love Crack the Skye - it's just a fantastic album, start to finish. But I've never been particularly keen on the rest of their music.

So I wasn't expecting too much from the new album, but I'm actually really enjoying it. Only listened to it a few times so far, but it sounds pretty cool so far  :tup :metal

The album is pretty great. I don't know though, I'm still not 100% on the band wagon for Mastodon. I would consider myself a fan, and I like the albums they have released, it's just something that keeps them from clicking fully. If I would guess, I would say it's the vocals. And even then it's hard to describe it. Because it's not so much a problem with the kind of vocals or the vocals being bad, the vocals are just sorta there and doesn't elevate the music IMO. The music itself is great for the most part.

I would probably place this album in my top20 for the year tho.

I'd say what kind of sets the new album apart is that the vocals are so extremely well done. I have always loved their vocals and they have always been one of my favourite aspects about Mastodon, particularly because they have always been relatively unusual and raw, but it seems like they put a whole lot of thought into the vocals, vocal melodies and vocal production on this new album, and Brann's performance especially is absolutely stellar :metal

Once More 'Round The Sun definitely has a vibe to it that none of the others have. All their albums sound different though.

I think this album has elements of every album before it.

I forgot to say it earlier but I think the production on most of their albums is just so boring. They have some pretty heavy riffs, but they don't really sound heavy on album. With a different production and sound, their music could be a few notches better.

Meh they sound just fine to me.  They're more influenced by classic rock than classic metal.

I think if they were a straight up metal band with the triggered drums and Peavey 5150 / Axe FX on every album - they'd lose their uniqueness.

What with the explicit content stamp?  Mine doesn't have that and besides Aunt Lisa, there's no swearing is there?

I'm digging this album I think it's a lot stronger than The Hunter, and I think I'll take this over CTS too.  I know that's controversial but some would know that that album didn't do much for me.  I'm still not sold of Witch House though.  I like Scott Kelly as a guest vocalist, but him pretty much signing the whole song somewhat leaves a bitter taste in my mouth when the album ends.

I love Diamond in the Witch House. Probably my favorite song alongside The Motherload, Chimes at Midnight, and Asleep in the Deep. I like Neurosis, though, and the song pretty much becomes a Neurosis song by the end.
