As much as I love Blood Mountain, I'd rather have him thinking in line with Crack The Skye ;)

An even better outcome would be BM+CtS

Mastodon appear to be turning into one of those bands that don't put out bad albums.

The Hunter was written and recorded in the studio in a hurry with barely any material and it's still awesome.

For this new album they're taking their time again and demoing everything beforehand like with Crack The Skye so

I have high hopes.

So, which album should I start with?  Seems like Crack The Skye is the fan favorite, but is it a good place to start with Mastodon, or would I be better off starting with one of their earlier albums?
Sincerely,
Jaffa

If you're into really heavy, start with Leviathan. If you're into melodic and accessible, start with The Hunter. If you're into progressive, start with Crack the Skye. I guess, I dunno.  ;D

Crack The Skye without a doubt. It's the most consistent, and although it's pretty "progressive", I still find it very accessible. Maybe also The Hunter, although that one is less awesome (still really good) and a lot more straight forward. CTS was my first Mastodon album and I think it's a good choice as an introduction to the band.

Blood Mountain>Crack The Skye>Leviathan>The Hunter>Remission>Call Of the Mastodon

That'd be the order I go and it happens to be my rankings as well :P

Leviathan and Crack The Skye seem to be loved fairly equally.

Though usually not by the same people.

That's where I started. It's a great entry point if you prefer a little more prog.

From a prog metal lover's perspective, Crack the Skye is their most even album at walking a line between sludge and prog. I'd recommend it as a start since it is rather proggy but still representative of Mastodon.

Well, for clarification, I really don't listen to very much prog.  That's not to say that I don't enjoy the genre, because I do, but my background is much more metal than prog.

Jaffa

Then you might try Blood Mountain. Very unique album, pretty heavy, some prog influence, and better songwriting than on Leviathan IMO. Although CTS is really not an overly proggy album either, so I'd still recommend that one as an introduction to the band. And I think it's a lot easier to get into than BM.

I think anyone who hasn't given Remission at least 10 full devoted listenings is depriving themselves of the true Mastodon experience.

I started with Leviathan. I was hooked instantly so maybe start there.

Then the production will only get better as you go on.

However - the same will be true if you start with Remission too.

But Remission has barely any clean singing on whilst Leviathan onwards has progressively more clean singing and the music gets slightly less heavy.

Crack the Sky indeed sounds like ass. Great songwriting but terrible production. It sounds thin, lifeless and dull.

I have no problem at all with that album's production.

I do like The Hunter though. The drums sound amazing on that album.

Blood Mountain is the best-sounding Mastodon album imo, it's got the rawness and balls of the first two albums mixed with the crisp, clear production of The Hunter.

I can't rank the albums. They're all brilliant in their own way. It would change on a daily basis.

Finally got around to getting Blood Mountain and The Hunter based on everyone's recommendations. Loving both of them. Mastodon may be my favorite musical discovery of the year. Gotta digest these, and the several other new albums I've gotten recently, then I'll pick up the rest of their albums.
