I wish people were more aware of the fact that CotM is not a true Mastodon album but actually a combo of their EP, Lifesblood, along with a few other tracks. Just seems awkward to use CotM instead of Lifesblood since the former's a compilation while the latter's a more proper "album" in terms of being useful for ranking lists despite it being an EP. No knock on anyone for using it though since most don fans are unaware of the difference.

I'm aware of the difference - but Brent counts it as a full length album since Relapse released it as such so I will too.

Brent also lacked the common sense to avoid enticing Shavo Odadjian and a member of the Wu Tang Clan into a fight when he was drunk and nearly sustained brain damage in the process.

I think if I had heard more of their material before I saw them live, then I would have had a much better time. I just wasn't as familiar as others were. Also the mix for them wasn't that great, it was really muddy. But the people were great and overall I had a fun time.

Instrumentally, they are one of the best live metal-bands out there. They are unbelievably tight!
Vocally, it really depends on the gig. I've seen them four times. On two gigs they were pretty bad IMO. When they opened up for Metallica last year they where pretty good, and when i saw them headline on The Hunter-tour, they where awesome.
Troy is probably the most reliable vocalist they have, while Brent can be pretty awful at times. Brann is pretty good as well, but he doesn't sing as much as the other two guys.

I think recently they've been more consistent with their vocals live.

As far as I know, Brent is doing vocal trainings and you can really see the positive results compared to his quite awful performance a couple of years ago.

We'll probably record in September, maybe…I'm guessing. But nothing is set in stone at the moment. We're pretty close, as far as our demos are concerned. We're getting there.

Okay.  This really is sad. Their sound for Mayhem is just awful, and nobody really rocked out, except a few of us. They we're pissed, and it seems to happen at all Mayhem shows. I sure hope its the crowd that's lame cause they were pretty good musically.

So I have Crack the Skye and it's been growing a lot on me recently. Where does everyone suggest I go next in Mastodon's catalog?

Blood Mountain if you don't mind some heavier and crazier stuff. Otherwise The Hunter.

Leviathan.
This.

Blood Mountain is probably proggier and a bit closer to Crack the Skye, but it's not as good and also has the dubious honor of having my least favorite Mastodon song on it. Leviathan is a thoroughly great album with some ripping songs.

"Bladecatcher."

That song is annoying as all hell. I hit the skip button as soon as I hear it.

I love the effect they put on their voices, and the riffs are molten lava deliciousness. Absolutely killer track if you ask me.

Leviathan used to be my favourite Mastodon album, but I *THINK* Blood Mountain has taken the cake recently. Just so awesome.

Even Bladecatcher. Those guitar riffs are so catchy.

So... finally got a chance to see these guys live @ The Orange Peel in Asheville, NC. I've had to miss them every time they've been around the last few years and I'm kicking myself for missing them with other acts like Alice in Chains, Deftones, The Dillinger Escape Plan, Ghost etc. but at the very least, now I can finally say that I beheld the behemoth; MASTODON!  :metal

It was the band's last tour date before heading back home and then getting back in the studio to finish up recording their new album which I've seen them mention for Spring 2014, UGH such a wait!. They've already done some studio work and supposedly already written a lot of the music that will be on the album. With it being the last tour date and not too far from home for the band they had many family members and friends in the audience and backstage/stage side (I think Troy's wife was there with his son who was sporting a superman cape). Being the headlining band (opening bands were USX (U.S. Christmas), and ASG), they were able to play a fairly long set, performing about 20 songs.

Setlist:

1. Black Tongue
2. Crystal Skull
3. Dry Bone Valley
4. Thickening
5. Megalodon
6. Oblivion
7. The Hunter
8. Octopus Has No Friends
9. Stargasm
10. Blasteroid
11. Crack the Skye
12. All the Heavy Lifting
13. Spectrelight
14. Bedazzled Fingernails
15. Curl of the Burl
16. Iron Tusk
17. March of the Fire Ants
18. Blood and Thunder
19. The Sparrow

I was up front and got some cool photos and one video (before security gave me the throat slash sign after I suppose they became aware I was videoing). The video is "Oblivion"... be sure to check it out as Brent Hinds walks right up to me to deliver a face melting solo to us all! (@ about the 3:50 mark). Going to post about 10 photos here from the show (hope that's cool by everyone?) and a link to the video on youtube.

Man, I can't wait for some new material from them! Especially if Brent's hairstyle means he's thinking in line with Blood Mountain again
