1. Remission
2. Leviathan
3. Lifesblood
4. Crack the Skye
5. The Hunter
6. Blood Mountain
This is definitely the closest to my ranking. Leviathon is my favourite though, and Crack the Skye might be lower

Mastodon and Dillinger touring the UK next year, definitely getting on that, Dillinger are one of my absolute favourite bands to see live as it's always fun to leave a gig with a few war wounds.

What about Call Of The Mastodon ?

We call it "Lifeslblood" in these parts greenhorn :P

1. Remission
2. Leviathan
3. Lifesblood
4. Crack the Skye
5. The Hunter
6. Blood Mountain

I'm guessing you may have already been a fan before Leviathan's release? Usually those are the only Mastodon fans to share my opinion(s) about them.

1. Remission
2. Leviathan
3. Lifesblood
4. Crack the Skye
5. The Hunter
6. Blood Mountain

wow... it's the first time we're going our separate ways....  :lol   Blood Mountain is my fave..... but that doesn't change one bit in my respect in your music taste  :metal

I guess I was just so overjoyed with Remission that it's been hard for me to like anything else quite as much since. Leviathan made a very good first impression with possibly my favorite transition (country lick-into-Sanitarium interlude) in any song ever outside of this Opeth gem (0:54-1:02) and Seabeast/Naked Burn's vocals were a nicely unexpected foray into clean vocals. Aqua Dementia has one of their best intros ever and they've been using that signature Bill Kelliher chaotic arpeggio thing extensively throughout later works. Hearts Alive is just a great epic as well.

Blood Mountain was just a big bummer for me coming off of two awesome albums like R and L. The closest to a go-to song on there for me is This Mortal Soil and to a lesser extent, Colony of Birchmen. Crack the Skye did even less for me on first listen than BM but I had a job where I commuted 45 minutes and listened to both albums (BM and CtS) frequently to give them a fair chance before closing the book on either. In the end, I liked CtS in spite of saminess issues and it just about drove the final nail in the coffin on BM. Divinations and Ghost of Karelia really helped it out.

The Hunter just does virtually nothing to turn my crank but it gets the higher ranking than BM for now since BM, as of now any way, is a tested dud for me with legitimate listening to confirm my feelings on it whereas The Hunter is still in that less-than-ten full spins area right now.

Also, thanks for the reassured allegiance Nem :tup

Hey great post buddy  :tup also made me realise that I haven't given a fair chance to Remission and Leviathan.... which I'm gonna do these couple of days....

As for the transitions... that's what I like the most about Mastodon.....great examples in Blood Mountain too....

Mastodon rankings? Hmm.

Bearing in mind that there isn't a Mastodon album I haven't loved to bits...

1. Leviathan
2. Remission
3. The Hunter
4. Crack The Skye
5. Blood Mountain
6. Lifesblood

I don't think they've done a bad album yet though, but of their full lengths, it does seem as they got more esoteric in their concepts, my interest wavered a bit. The main reason why I love The Hunter so, I imagine.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

Of course they belong in the same pic. Dinosaurs and mastodons were both prehistoric creatures.

Saw them last night in Oslo.
One word: INTENSE. 23 songs, no breaks between them. Sold out show, they sounded amazing, the room was electric - one of the best metal shows i've ever been to, thats for sure.
They've added "Thickening" to their set which was awesome. Brann came out after "Creature lives" and talked for a bit. They seemed baffled that their fanbase in Norway was so big! I dont think they've ever headlined here before, so it really seemed like they where kind of shocked by the response they got.
A funny thing: Brent fractured his foot before the show. Apparently he slipped on some ice outside the venue. He had to walk around like a robot while playing, and it looked really uncomfortable when he had to step on pedals with his right foot  :lol As Brann said: "He's from the south, he's not used to this shit.."
