First album I've heard by these guys.  Pretty awesome and fresh; I like.

How's their other stuff sound?
Hairy, Beardy, and amazing.

So like a heavier, doomier, less melodic DT sans keyboards?

Seeing as you like prog, get Crack the Skye IMMEDIATELY.

You're a fucking stupid bitch.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Essentially, I'd just go from newest to oldest, as the oldest of their stuff might not be your kind of thing.  Although I love it.

The Creature Lives is like an *actually* really good version of the type of bands that NME and MOJO magazine go nuts over - who think that just having one chord for the whole song, drums on every downbeat  and a string section = automatically good.Like Elbow.

" Oh its really mature music - everything is on the downbeat and there's one chord and a string section. "

 :-\

Creature Lives =  :tup :tup

Despite peopel saying Dave Grohl is not playing, does anything think the growl at 0:43 on Blasteroid is him...or at least think he is part of the background vocals? The very end of the growl sounds a lot like him.

Aside from that...sucha  great album. So many stand out tracks. And so much more cohesive than Blood Mountain.

Current Ranking:
Leviathan
The Hunter
Crack the Skye
Remission
Blood Mountain
The Call of the Mastodon

Listening to the album for the first time. Now at 'Thickening'. So far, this is pretty much the most fun I've had first listen with a metal album in a while. Sounds like they've totally outdone themselves in another way.
Not 'Down To F***', but 'Dream Theater Forums' .

They have never disappointed. Leviathan pretty much blew me away in 2004 and every album has been a step up since.

Anyone hear their Jonah Hex EP? That's also worth a listen. Pretty Epic in places.

On my first listen. Pretty straight forward at this point. Huge props to Creature Lives and Curl of the Burl.

I really dig this album but I dunno if I'll ever get around to loving it. There's too many songs outside of their realm which never really manifest into anything interesting. I'm actually liking the more traditional ones better.

I love how they've maintained who they are but have definitely delved into some different musical aspects. This shit is killer IMO. :metal

Only song I've heard so far is Black Tongue, which actually inspires a visceral reaction from me. I can't not move my body when listening to it. Metal at its finest.

To me - " The Hunter " sounds like the album they were aiming for with Crack The Skye.

+ It's staggering how good it is considering it's their 6th album !!  :omg:

I disagree. CTS succeeded on its own merits and everything from the riffing to song construction sounded 100% purposeful. While some elements from that album are there in The Hunter it's more sparse than anything. It's like hearing elements of an album to come but after the fact, if that makes any sense.

I see what you're saying and maybe Crack The Skye has been worn in and The Hunter is just fresh but at this early stage I am enjoying The Hunter a lot more immediately than I did with Crack The Skye . :)

There is no song I do not enjoy on Hunter but Quintessence has never clicked with me. Not saying it's bad, it's just my least favourite on that album.  :tup
