Even if I wanted to listen to it I couldn't.  University has very strict policy on torrenting.

I quite enjoyed that. The title track is my initial favorite. The guitar solos are just plain nuts.
Orion....that's the one with a bunch of power chords and boringly harsh vocals, isn't it?

Holy fucking shit, what an amazing album. I had nothing against Crack the Skye, don't get me wrong, but damn, I'm glad they abandoned the big concepts and ideas and just did a straight up rocking album. Too early to compare against the rest of their work but I haven't been this excited on first listen since Leviathan.
The bones of beasts and the bones of kings become dust in the wake of the hymn.
Mighty kingdoms rise, but they all will fall, no more than a breath on the wind.

I'm worried the novelty of new Mastodon will wear off and it'll sound stale.

This has me excited.  This is exactly what I wanted them to do.  I can't wait to listen to it.  I for one, was very disappointed with CTS.  I'm so glad they are going back to this sort of style.
Everyone else, except Wolfking is wrong.

They are streaming the whole album on youtube a week before release:

I must say these songs rock! I loved Crack the Skye and this is a good follow up to just write some rocking songs  :metal

Well Leviathan, Blood Mountain, and Crack the Skye were all concept albums.  I doubt they're done with them forever now.  But it is cool to hear what's probably their most "fun" album to date.

first review up

I'm glad he likes it but I disagree with his opinions about earlier Mastodon albums.  They hit their stride with Leviathan and haven't really left it (save a few songs on Blood Mountain).

Also the Sparrow is one of the best songs on the album.

Might just be me but there's a lot of riffs/songs in major keys which kind of surprises me. Makes the album a little quirky.

I agree, really adds a unique sound to a lot of the songs/sections.

Yeah.  First listen of "Blasteroids" I was so confused until it hit the super metal part.   :lol

So along with listening to other new releases of today and the month, I've been listening to the rest of Mastodon's catalogue to stave off the temptation of listening to the album early.  I'm liking Leviathan a lot more than I remember.  I mean I've always thought it was a pretty good album, but it's better than I even remember, unghunghungh.

SO. FUCKING. GOOD.
Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.
