Most releases have been pretty underwhelming this year.
That's simply a lie.

Nope its not.

Iconoclast was incredibly boring.
Chuckles and Mr Squeezy was underwhelming.
Born This Way was not amazing.
Suck it and See was only a marginal improvement on the very weak Humbug.
Endgame was only OK.
Turtleneck and Chain was pretty weak.

That's a good chunk of albums I was really looking forward to.
Granted there is still DT, Opeth, Mastodon, Mars Volta, maybe Rush, maybe PT, maybe PoS, and some other shit to look forward to. But, as of August, there have only been about 6 slam dunk albums: Scurrilous, Ghost, Deconstruction, Wasting Light, The Collective, and The Color Spectrum.
Born This Way was imo great, and there was Decapitated, and Obscura.  Also Ghost's album came out in November 2010... Granted the American release was in January, but that still doesn't make it a 2011 album. :P  I also found Iconoclast better than some other Symphony X I'd heard before.

Yeah new Thrice will be nice.
I'm not saying this is a weak year for music. But a lot of the albums I've been most looking forward to have really let me down.

Its very clear from titles like "Stargasm" and "Octopus Has No Friends" that this is going to be their "fun" album.  :lol  Looking very forward to hearing it.

If Bedazzled Fingernails isn't the heaviest, most br0otuhl song on the album I am going to very, very sad.
I felt its length in quite a few places.

I'm looking forward to Stargasm the most. A song about sex in space is what I've always been looking for.

Very cool song, but the chorus felt a little weird to me. Might just take a bunch more listens.

I like it, but I think I like "Black Tongue" better.
Also this.

:metal  Mastodon have yet to disappoint. Curl Of The Burl reminds me of Colony Of Birchmen but even more awesome.

Have a feeling the album will be outstanding.

Six albums and no dip in quality ? Amazing.

Six albums and no dip in quality ? Amazing.

Word. I attribute it to these factors although I'm sure there are more I don't know of:

1) They appear to all be pretty good friends.

2) Brent's capable of being THE BAND but doesn't at all seem like he does so unless the others are okay with it which means you can get something as conceptually cohesive as Crack the Skye without having other recordings suffer because of the others getting complacent.

3) Their collective influences are varied enough that they've become good at not hitting the wall creatively.

4) They have an affinity for complexity but are secure enough in themselves to not let it get in the way of the music's overall flow.

^ Yes, and they have enough varied influences to not just sound like one type of rock or metal.

If you only listen to grindcore - then that's all you're going to sound like...

I know it's probably intentional, but the guitar in COTB sounds awful, like a CD clipping like crazy.

Indeed.

Maybe it was the quality of the recording sent to the website that hosted it?
We'll have to wait until September and see.

Also, don't think this has been posted.

I feel ya. Really bright rhythm tone, lots of high frequencies. Maybe a Mesa Recto? I'm not too familiar with metal amps.

I meant that they're obviously gonig for a stripped back, under-produced kind of sound. Also I just listened to the video version on Youtube, and it doesn't sound as bad, so it was probably just the link.

Mastodon endorses Orange amps, i believe.
They where defenitely going for a really "sludgy" sound, and it works IMO. The song has really grown on me. Very catchy, atleast for Mastodon.
It looks like we're getting an album of short, to the point Mastodon-rock! Really looking forward to it!
Only looking at the songtitles im probably looking the most forward to Bedazzled Fingernails (because it sounds br00tal) and Octopus Has No Friends (because of the title :lol).
