I always thought that part was kind of a joke?

I don't know if it was intentionally a joke, although it I suspect it was (knowing the guys' sense of humor). Either way, the underlying riff is just so :metal that it doesn't matter. I love it and I crank up every time I hear it.

Something is going on in the Mastodon camp. Just cancelled their tour due to a critical situation with someone. They were vague.

I do remember from the Emperor of Sand documentary, that wife of one of the band members was battling cancer.

I hope that the worst hasn't happened! They don't deserve these kinds of tragedies upon them..

Damn, this morning I read the last three posts before leaving for work. When I got in the car, the stereo was playing Roots Remain and the lyrics really hit me. Sad coincidence.

Yeah, that was my first guess too. Hope to God that's not what's going on.

So it’s the band’s manager who is battling pancreatic cancer which is the reason for the cancellation.

Whenever you read quotes from Brent, you wonder if he's joking around. But this does seem serious, so lets see what the rest of the band feels is the right thing to do.

Brent Hinds needs time off.

Hmm...hooray for him showing that the industry works people to their bone. If he needs a break, I'm fine with that.

Dude sounds like he's either drunk or high, or seriously burnt out. Or all three.  :lol

Mastodon has been going non-stop for a while now for sure. But its that old syndrome of...you get to a high water mark, and do you push forward and capitalize, or do you rest. Seems like the other dudes want to keep pushing, whereas Brent has other priorities. Could be an interesting next 12 months for the band....

I'm glad he's only talking about a year off rather than an indefinitely hiatus or something. I think that's pretty reasonable and I hope the other guys agree.

Agreed. I mean, I understand the need to make money. I really do. And get while the getting is good. But sounds like Brent needs to do some family time, recharge, etc. And frankly, as long as they can make ends meet, would make sense. They have been going nonstop...

I'm pretty sure the first two are standard operating procedure for Brent.

What with them losing their manager/good friend, and Brent being as burnt out as he is, I wouldn't be surprised in the slightest if Mastodon announced an indefinite hiatus within the next couple months....

Yep, I agree. It would suck, but I get it. I saw Brann released a solo song not too long ago connected with DC Comics. I could see him doing his own thing, and the other guys doing projects for a few years. I think the issue is (without knowing the parties involved) has Mastodon become such a big business now, that the guys can't afford to take time off from the band? Sure, Brent is burnt out, but he'll get better real quick if he is having money trouble.

Therein lies the issue. Always boils down to money. For their sake, hopefully they can all comfortably afford to take a break and recharge the batteries.

Totally a guess here, but I'm thinking Brent isn't doing shit, and he'll come in later. It's clear that HE wants time off, but the others want to keep making music. So my feeling is they are probably going to demo up a bunch of shit without him, giving him a break for a bit, and then approach him on how he feels about it, and if he has anything. Then they'll sit down and figure out the album.

Isn't that basically what they did for Emperor of Sand? If I remember correctly the only thing he wrote for that album were the solos.
...in my opinion

I don't remember, honestly. He wrote those songs for Cold Dark Place, which...I think I remember them spinning it and saying they were tracks meant for Emperor of Sand, which "didn't fit." If that wasn't a creative spin job, then Brent DID write for Emperor of Sand, they just didn't use his songs.

You always have to read the tea leaves with these bands and their way of spinning stuff. It sounds to me like Brent knows Mastodon is where he makes his money touring, so he doesn't want to leave. But at the same time, he doesn't really want to be there either. Hopefully all of them can get on the same page again.

Which is a shame cause Brent's riffs are actually incredibly good, but most of his solos annoy me.
