I'd say it's better than everything after Crack the Skye.

I'm that weirdo who loves The Hunter.

I love the straightforwardness and the spacey sound / production.

It sounds amazing. I also love the catchiness of it. I'm not the Mastodon fan who just wants Remission every time.

I dunno. I loved it instantly and it's in my top 3 comfortably along with Crack The Skye and Blood Mountain.

Bottom 3 but in no means least are : Once More Round The Sun, Remission, Call of The Mastodon.

I don't think there's necessarily anything wrong with Blood Mountain, I just got into Mastodon with Crack the Skye, so I'm mostly familiar with their discography from then on. I also have a fairly narrow tolerance for harsher vocals.
Photobucket sucks.

I wasn't really ready or in the mood for the new album when it came out and it didn't do much for me, but I knew I just needed to give it time and come back.  It's growing on me, and there are some really great choruses on this one.  This band really exploring what they can do with each album, good to see.

Having 3 vocalists ( even Bill does clean backups live now... ) means that no one person is using their voice for the full 90 - 120 minutes.

Also if one guy is unable to perform vocally - one of the other 2 could do it.

I'd love to see a gig where Troy cant do harsh vocals so Bill does all of them :coolio

Dude has an amazing growl on him.

Also - he recently confirmed that " no - he doesn't do lead vocals on Deathbound - he's never done vocals in the studio - he's seen that rumour and dunno how it started. "

Isn't he credited for it on the album though?

I saw few video from the show where Brann was sick so he couldn't sing. Couldn't believe Troy can pull off some pretty high passages :o he isn't comfortable up there, for sure, but he could do it if he had to.

Haven't seen this mentioned anywhere else...

Anyone noticed that the intro to " Word To The Wise " is very 46+2 ?

This is pretty cool:

If they did the whole album like this I'd happily zone out and lose myself in it  :corn

So Mastodon are being supported by Red Fang and Russian Circles on their upcoming UK tour  :metal

I'm looking forward to seeing both. I've still not gotten around to listening to the latter yet but I've heard so many good things. This is shaping up to be a great show.

So apparently this is finally happening:

Mastodon - Cold Dark Place

Due out 22nd September, apparently it's going to be an acoustic EP!

Where'd you see it was acoustic? All I can find is the Loudwire quote that's been around for a couple years now:

Quote from: Brent in Loudwire
“It’s shaping up to be a double album,” Hinds told Guitar World, going on to tout his own contributions, adding, “One is an album I wrote myself and recorded with Brann [Dailor, drums] and Troy [Sanders, bass and vocals] during the Once More ‘Round the Sun sessions.” Speaking more about what he wrote, Hinds continued, “My part is called Cold Dark Place, and it has to do with a nasty breakup that I went through. I wrote some pretty dark, beautiful, spooky, funky, ethereal, melancholy music, which also sounds like the Bee Gees a little bit [laughs].”

I've just edited my original post to say 'apparently' it's going to be an acoustic EP.

I saw this on the reddit, prog metal sub. Rumour has it that it is going to be acoustic. That is only rumour though and as far as I know nothing has been confirmed. Who knows what it will be!

Sorry for the misinformation.

There's only 4 tracks on the EP, so that's not surprising to me.

I like it, it feels very different from some of their previous works but I'm a sucker for Brents songwriting.

I'm chuffed we get more Mastodon this year. Bring it!

Recommendations for a n00b please. I read The Hunter is their most critically acclaimed, start there?

When I started with Mastodon in late 2010, I started with Crack the Skye and fell in love. The concept, atmosphere, and balance of aggressive and melodic was the perfect cocktail of music for me. Then The Hunter came out and I liked that, but didn't really listen to it through. Now I like it, but it took awhile for it to click with me. Once More Round the Sun is pretty accessible, and for me intensely personal since I listened to it around the time of my mom's heart surgery, so the lyrics really hit me and eerily match up with things that happened around the time. I could go on with that....

Long story short, I'd start with Crack The Skye
God have mercy on a man
Who doubts what he's sure of.
