This is definitely their most consistent album since Crack the Skye.

There's really no weak song or boring moment.

Very touching. I thought Troy's characterization of "sincere" is perfect.
"Owners of dogs will have noticed that, if you provide them with food and water and shelter and affection, they will think you are God. Whereas owners of cats are compelled to realize that, if you provide them with food and water and affection, they draw the conclusion that they are God.” — Christopher Hitchens

Yep, Roots is fantastic. The verses are just as powerful as the chorus, and who could forget the riff after the second chorus? Not to mention the solo. Just amazing all around.

Finally got around to listening to this. It's a really solid album that I enjoyed every song on.

My favorites from it are Sulatan's curse, Roots Remain, Steambreather, Ancient Kingdom, and Clandestiny
Do you read Sutter Cane?

What's up with the lack of Brent in all of the videos they've been releasing? Could they just not get him serious for a few minutes?

Probably. Brent looks like a guy that is just in character all the time, being high, ridiculous and a joker 24/7. He seems to be most serious when he's playing guitar.  :lol

Emperor Of Sand was recorded in one month.

And it sounds great.

I don't understand why it takes some bands YEARS to *track* an album.

It's ridiculous.

It will be interesting what the guys do with the extra material(originally was going to be a double?).

I'm not really big into Mastodon, but I gave this album a chance and I'm really enjoying it.

Steambreather and Ancient Kingdom are the obvious standouts to me.

I don't think I've seen one negative comment on here so far. I mean, I'm totally biased but it is a great album.

Well, now that you say that, I've listened to it twice and maybe I'm not in the mood but I'm finding it hard to get into.  Sounds a bit samey and I have to really pay attention to keep focused on it.  I can't put my finger on it, but it's early days.  Was it an instant hit for you guys, or did it take a few listens?

Those albums were both pretty instant for me. Crack the Skye took some time to grow on me (and is now my favourite of theirs)

Here's a question:

What's your favourite moment on any mastodon album ?

Mine is :

"Sinister twin. Choking on fear. Bonded iron. Sink to the core.."

Chills every time.

HEY! HO! LET'S FUCKING GO!
HEY! HO! LET'S GET UP AND ROCK AND ROLL!

The build up near the end of The Czar is up there too. (The part starting just before, and including, "Spiraling up through the crack in the sky")

Speaking of The Czar, the opening to Escape is pretty much the highlight of that song for me.

& yeah, I actually had to look up the lyric Kotow mentioned... I really need to relisten to CTS sometime.  :\

Of course Anthony Fantano doesn't like the album, what a surprise.

Who is Anthony Fantano and why should I care what he thinks?

I legitimately do really like that section a lot. Far from my favorite moment but I do enjoy it quite a bit.

As for my favorite moment...I'm not too sure. I'm insanely indecisive and my tastes change and vary so much that I probably couldn't pick one since there are so many that would be contenders.

My favorite moment is the moment I found Mastodon. D'AWWW!  :heart

First thing that popped in my head was THAT riff in The Czar. And that other riff that comes after it. And the last part of The Czar.

Yeah, that's a great one.

Another one for me would be when the Sanitarium riff kicks in in Megalodon.

I'd say the intro to Crack The Skye, the entire build up to the first verse. Both beautiful and incredibly powerful.

Roots Remain's solo reminds me A LOT of the CTS general vibe, and the piano ending... Beautiful.

Just wondering... In which track did Brann play bass, in homage to his grandma?

Hey gang I put on Emperor Of Sand to do some work and it really clicked. I mean - I loved it instantly but it *really* clicked.

I think it's one of their best albums.

Word to the Wise is jam packed with hooks. The chorus is especially fantastic.

Scorpion breath is the only one that I'm not getting at all so far. I don't think there's anything to get about it, actually.

...

Also - Emperor Of Sand got to #1 in the US and UK Rock albums charts plus #1 on the US Billboard for physical only sales and #8 in the UK physical sales. #11 in the UK overall.

Pretty good !

I hope they continue to grow in popularity steadily and maybe album #10 will be an Actual No.1 album.
