When I first saw Eons on the vinyl I got all excited, thinking it was a vinyl only bonus (segue) track in the middle of the album. Then I noticed Roots Remain was missing.  ;D

The vinyl sounds a lot different to the cd version to my ears. More highs, but definitely not less compressed. Dig the sound anyway. I always like it when the vinyl has a different sound to   it compared to the regular release. Also really digging the colouring vinyl with the pencils. I wish I had children.

Vinyl sounds really good to me.

Eons must have been an earlier title and it got changed once vinyls had been sent off for pressing.

Kind of like what happened to the running order on Hardwired to Self Destruct.

I'm serious. Once More... ends with Halloween for me. I can't stand the track (Diamond, that is), it feels out of place and is terrible as an album closer.

It's so weird how tastes differ.

Diamond is *easily* my favourite song on Once More...  :tup

Or should I say - it's so weird how - whatever I really like - that's the one that ends up being the one that everyone hates.

It's actually so predictable that - in about 2000 - I discovered this new band and I really liked their album like a lot.

The next day on my music course - I heard some guy say he'd just heard this band that were " fucking shit ".

I didn't even need to ask as I knew 100% exactly what he was gonna say next and sure enough it was the band I really liked. . .

- - - - - - -

EDIT

I like that Mastodon have done 7 official albums ( 8 if you count the Call Of The Mastodon compilation )... And they're still only in their early 40s.

They've got roughly another 10 years before they get to Metallica's age and if they keep releasing albums every 2.5 years that's maybe 4 more albums in that time.

I expect them to *gradually* slow down... But not to the point where we only get an album every 5 years. They're not big enough that they can live off an album sales for 5 years.

They need to tour to exist. Which I guess is good & bad. They probably tour comfortably though...

Also I think their discography is WAY more consistent than Metallica ( lol not exactly hard el oh el amirite )...

Emperor is their 7th official album and Reload was Metallica's 7th album.

Yeah I don't think it's very impressive to release material at a faster and more consistent rate than Metallica, Mastodon aren't particularly slow but not incredibly fast either.

Periphery is one that comes to mind, 3 full length albums, 1 double-album and 1 EP (not counting Icarus Lives EP) from 2010-2016. Quality of the material of course is subjective, but at least whatever they're doing seems to be liked by a lot of people as they're easily the most successful band to come out of the Sumerian Records startup around 2010
people on this board are actual music fans who developed taste in music and not casual listeners who are following current fashion trends and listening to only current commercial hits.

8 albums in 17 years ? that's an average of one every 2 years.

Mind you - they're both faster than Tool and Portishead and My Bloody Valentine etc etc

Mastodon & Tool both released an album in 2006.

Since then - Mastodon have put out four albums and Dream Theater have put out five.

Also i'm glad that Mastodon are not on :soon: as they'd probably end up having the same guitar and drum sound as every other metal band.

I like that their albums sound a bit more natural.

Ditto. Diamond is by far my least favorite album closer from them. Just drags on without any direction it seems like.

So after 4 listens I'd say this album has surpassed my expectations. It's got so many great songs, it's consistent, the solos are great (as others have mentioned), there are catchy choruses, heavy riffs and psychedelic moments. It's the full package I've been waiting for since Crack the Skye. It's top 5 2017 album for me, without a doubt, at this point.

Long live the 'don  :metal :metal :metal

I dunno I think The Last Baron has something that Jaguar God doesn't.

Baron has *that* funk riff for starters. My fave riff on CTS.

I'm totally falling for this album; it's my favorite Mastodon album since Crack the Skye. Roots Remain is my favorite song right now but I need to listen more, as I only bought it a few days ago...

Also, I'm surprised to see the hate for Diamond In the Witch House... it's a top 3 song on OMRTS for me.

" Mastodon definitely sold out on The Hunter "

:lolpalm:

Yeah they signed to RoadRunner and the album was twelve 3 minute 4/4 pop songs...

Blasteroid, Stargasm and Spectrelight were just missing that guest rap from Ne-Yo or Jason Derulo or Jay-Z !!!

" You'd never hear anything from Before The Hunter on the radio "

" Dude that's rubbish I've heard Oblivion and Colony Of Birchmen on the radio plenty "

" I wouldn't know I don't listen to radio "

:rollin f---ing love arguments like this. Completely loses the argument but still tries to keep arguing.

Listened to the Sand Emperor on my morning commute and it was pretty damn good! :tup
will listen some more over the coming days

I think Clandestiny was the highlight and the ending to Jaguar God was cool as well.
Nice guitar work throughout, have yet to get a hold on the melodic aspect.

Troy said this album reflects the last 17 years which

May explain why there are echoes of earlier works.

Of course Anthony Fantano doesn't like the album, what a surprise.

I think it's at least on par with The Hunter and OMATS, and personally I like the style better than those two records.

Yep, I love Anthony but that was a really harsh review.

I have no problem with people not digging the pop influences and the more melodic side of the band, but to claim the music isn't heavy is pretty silly. Of course it's not Remission-style heavy, but if that was the default standard of heaviness, NWOBHM would be chill out music.

I haven't seen his new review yet, but didn't he give OMRTS a 7? I'd certainly say EOS is heavier than OMRTS (with the exception of a few tracks).
