Fear of a nuclear holocaust
« on: May 14, 2011, 06:19:55 PM »
Well in history class I am currently learning about the cold war and for those of you who lived during it, what was life like under all that constant threat? Did you pay too much attention to it? I'm just wondering because it sounded like incredibly scary shit and it would be interesting to hear some accounts from people who were there. Now I know its probably not even comparable but how do you feel about the relations between nuclear threat then and now? Point is I can just look up "facts" about life in a history text book but I think actually hearing from you guys would be better.

I remember back in high school i took this american history course. my teacher lived through that time, and i remember her saying "you can't comprehend how scared we felt during that time".
There is so little respek left in the world, that if you look it up in the dictionary, you'll find that it has been taken out.

I guess I understood the concept of MAD before most others did.  I didn't worry about impending nuclear death at all.  Every once in a while the subject would come up, and we'd just kind of shrug it off.  We did do the duck and cover thing at school all the time, but that was more about the threat from the Godless Tornado menace than the Rooskies.
Argument, the presentation of reasonable views, never makes headway against conviction, and conviction takes no part in argument because it knows.

We had constant "Duck and Cover" drills during the 70's at school.  It was always scary, we honestly thought it would happen at some point.  I was always thinking what I would do at any particular moment if the sirens started, or if there was an actual detonation.
