How about Xavier?  Honestly, I only thought of it because I was trying to come up with something that started with the same letter is Xizor.  But I think it fits the criteria of being uncommon but not so much that it's totally out there.  I can only think of a couple of Xaviers I've known, and they were both cool guys.
Like that is at all relevant  :lol
Many names have been "spoiled" for my wife and I because we knew someone with that name that we didn't like.

Anyone have a stong opinion on the name Ezra? My wife has liked it for a long time, but I'm not sold. Up until 3 years ago I thought it was a girls name for one. Second, I feel like it's kind of a Jewish name.

I've also always pictured it as a chick's name.

Ezra is a book in the Bible so yes it's Jewish.  And it's a male name.

Of course it's relevant.  If you associate a particular name with people you don't like, you probably will not choose the name.  If you associate it with people you do like or admire, that elevates it.  Why do you think there aren't a whole lot of girls named Jezebel, for instance?

@LX:  I kinda like Ezra.  And, yeah, what H said.

Well for modern people, Ezra Pound is the one well known person I can think of with the name, and he was decidedly anti-Jewish.  Noted poet and tied to the vein of authors that includes Hemingway, i.e. that messed up but great group.  Eventual American fascist and conspiracy theorist.

Did I mention he's a great poet?

I think Ezra is used a lot outside of Jewish circles these days. I just don't want my kid's name to scream Jewish if he's not.

I used to joke that I'd only go with Ezra if the middle name was Nehemiah.

If it makes any difference for anyone with ideas, my 2 year old son's name is Max.

FWIW, I never associated Ezra with being a female's name, so don't let that be a hangup for you if you like it.

You should take a name you like, and to make it more unique add one syllable before it.

JaMarcus
LaBron
JerMichael
RaShawn

are all actual names.  You can be really creative by taking an uncommon name and then adding a syllable.

WaEzra
PoCraven
ZeHayden

It also works with other syllables, just find one that suits you.

I've always liked the old school names like Samuel or Jacob.
Jacob is actually the most popular boys name in the country right now.

Damn I didn't know that.  How about Benjamin?
