Lecture demonstration - feedback appriciated
« on: May 10, 2011, 12:53:25 PM »
I took a course on how to give lectures this semester, and our final 40-50 minute lecture was taped so we could see ourselves and try to improve.  I'd like to take that a step further and see what you, DTF, thinks.

I know its asking alot of you to sit through 44 some minutes of a lecture, but it doesn't hurt to try.  You might learn something, you might be entertained, you never know.  It would be the first lecture on stereochemistry, and aside from the one or two minor factual errors, it's all there.  I put a lot of time and effort into this and I'm fairly proud of the result.

A few things to keep in mind - while I was being taped, I wasn't lecturing to the camera, but to a class, so comments about being out of frame or not looking at the camera are irrelavent.

I know I'm fat.

Beyond that, any constructive feeback would be greatly appriciated.

I'll watch some of this later tonight and tell you what I think. I can't promise I will be able to do the whole thing because I'm in the middle of working on my last exam and I don't think I can take too much more learning.  :lol

About 15 minutes in.

It's real good, I am enjoying it. I also like the subtle humor, I wish my professors would do that haha.

Don't have time to watch it, but the first thing I'd do something about is your clothing. I know it's cool to keep things casual but you seem a bit sloppy up there in jeans and a t-shirt.

I really enjoy the lecture. You seemed pretty fidgety and nervous at first. You kept swaying and pausing often. But after a few minutes in, you were comfortable and all that went away. You even make some pretty funny jokes. :)

Watched the first part and it's really well done!   :tup  The only thing that irks me is writing the words across two boards, their decreasing size, and mixture of capital and lowercase letters.  Very minor and nitpicky, but I can't help myself.

Yeah.  I didn't have time to go home and change, but I will be most casual prof ever.

Nice! Watching some now (though I am working so I may not watch it all in one shot).

I had to do this for a math/technology class, and it was a mock lesson that lasted less than 10 minuts. It was on logarithmic properties.

Isn't it weird to be videotaped while teaching? You are doing great from what I see and we are similar in how we are....quiet to start but you keep it interesting and relevant.

Actually, part of it is about the first 3 minutes is all first run since I didn't have a baseball bat during my previous practice, where as the rest of it was part of previous practice runs.

I just realized that there was a siren going off.  I didn't even notice it when I was talking.  Stupid windows had to be kept open because otherwise it was too hot in that room.  The camera didn't really bother me though, but I'm sort of used to giving short lectures and in college I was an actor on my friend's sketch comedy show.

Watching more, some constructive criticism (and stuff I have been guilty of and still working on):

-One thing I would suggest, and I do this A LOT as well, is to maybe talk louder and emphasize pronunciation more. This is coming from a guy who deals with that everyday...I have a tiny speech problem in that I tend to "blur" my words together and it can sound like I am saying something completely different sometimes (it's even gotten me in trouble before).

There is nothing wrong with having a naturally quiet voice. I have the same type of voice. Make it work for you. The added pressure of being videotaped may skew what you're like, though.

-When writing on the board, my professors would get on my case hard if I was always "talking to the board." You're a righty? Put your right side toward the wall and write so that you can easily make little effort to turn to your left to speak to the class as you write. Especially since our voices are similar, the wall will absorb a lot of the sound and students may miss some important things you are saying.

-Try to let what you write be big enough. ;) it takes practice, though, because it's hard to visualize how the student sees the writing on the board to how you see it on the board.

Minor quips, though. You are doing great from my seat!
