Last night I turned my computer off for the first time in a few days (I usually put it into hibernation). This morning I tried to turn it on again, and the first time the first screen with the Mac symbol and spinning wheel seemed to take forever so I force shut down and tried again. This time it got past that to the login screen and when I tried to click my name I couldn't; I thought it was a crash but I could still move my mouse. Now I'm stuck at the blue screen just before login.

If it's a laptop, try taking the battery out and putting it back in again.

THE MAGICAL POWER OF SEARCH ENGINES ALSO BROUGHT UP THIS:

"on startup hold Option-Apple-P-R after you hear the bell sound"

1. It's a pro so I can't access the battery.

2. What's the Apple P-R button?

I DON'T KNOW.

Serious question here but have you tried just holding down the power button until it goes off and then switching it back on again?

Bring it to an Apple store and have them run a diagnostic.

Whew!  After 20 minutes of waiting, got onto my computer.  I've just uninstalled StarCrafts 1 + 2, all my Steam games, a video player app called Silverlight, and Google Earth, as those are my most recently installed apps and so the prime suspects.  I think I'll go either today or tomorrow to the Apple Store, my only qualm being that the only means of transportation to the distant Burlington Mall is a $30+ cab ride ($30+ each way :-\).

2. What's the Apple P-R button?

The one where you blindside your user base with misinformation :neverusethis:

But seriously what he meant was hold down the Option, Apple, P and R buttons all at once.

What tjanuranus means is that Macs are powered by harvesting the energy from children (like in The Matrix) and resetting the pram, just just replaces the baby that the Mac is taking its power from.

Can't expect a single baby to power a laptop forever, can you?

Okay, here is a mac question:

On my old PC, I was able to use a program called Goldwave that was online and free, and it enabled me to break up and edit songs (like, if I wanted to edit a 30-minute song down into five different tracks for the purposes of making it easier to skip to parts of the song if on a short drive or something).  Is there a similar program for macs that is easy to use and free?

Don't know about any built in software but Audacity does that and it works on Macs:

https://audacity.sourceforge.net/download/

It is free.

I tried Audicity before.  It doesn't appear to support mp3s and tries to save everything as a project under the .aup format.  I am thinking I am not doing something right here. :lol

It does support exporting of MP3s. You just have to download the codec (instructions below)

Have you tried turning it on? I'm pretty sure they're just supposed to work.

And shouldn't the thread say "any mac geniuses in the house?"  hhahaha the thought that mac tech people are called mac geniuses is too hysterical given their old ad campaign that featured idiots using the products.

because there is no battery. It's a desktop. well there is a small battery for keeping time but that's not what was being referred to. And that can be changed easily. If it's a macbook pro then obviously it's super easy to change the battery.

:rollin I've only had one experience with a Mac Genius and he had no idea what the problem was with my sister's MacBook and couldn't even fix/reset it, so she had to get a new one, but because her one (which she'd only had for 3 months) was "obsolete", she had to pay extra to get the latest model.

So yeah, I don't have much faith in the word Genius in that context. :P
