2011 Giro d'Italia Thread

So. Let the epicness unfold.

Stage profiles, in one img.. pretty epic. Obviously, the first week is easy and for the sprinters - then we'll get to the real stuff.

Stage 14 with Zoncolan will be epic, as we also have Monte Crostis. Here's an image of Crostis:

This giro is going to be epic.

DISCUSS.

Your tips for today's stage?

Mine:
1. Cavendish
2. Petachi
3. Farrar

Sebastian Lang from Omega Pharma Lotto is going on a monster solo break-away today... 20 minutes ahead or something. At least he gets some attention...

And, yeah! Let's make Sky the DTF team :)

Lolsky. I don't think Sky will do too well though, Lövkvist will do well the first 2/3 of the race - might be in the top 15 - then he'll drop to 25ish.

I hope Petacchi wins a lot of flat stages, he's in my Fantasy team :P.

Yeah, Sky won't do that well in the Giro. They're going to do better in TdF, though, with Wiggins, Boasson Hagen, Michael Rogers in the team...

Decent sprint. Ale Jet is a deserving winner, it was on the border what he did there... but I think the jury made the right decision to not DQ him.

Yeah, agreed. Cavendish is usually quick to complain if he don't win. Nothing in that sprint should result in DQ. Garmin Cervelo and Farrar could've done a lot better, but the train started the run too early and everything got messed up...

So.. last 13km today looks like this:

There's no way this is going to be a regular spring. Petacchi might survive though. Best bet is on some one like Visconti for this stage.

What a crash man  :sadpanda: :sadpanda: :sadpanda: :sadpanda:

They showed a close-up of Weylandts face... looked so terrible. He musta hit the rocks face first. They were doing CPR on him.

Wouter Weylandt has a pulse, he's probably going to survive as it looks now. What a relief, they're taking him to the hospital.

I stopped caring about the stage after that crash.

Yup, that's the worst thing I have ever seen on live television...
In fact, quite unnecessary of Rai, the Italian producer to show it.

Good to hear that he has a pulse. I hear he got adrenaline shot as well. I also stopped caring about the race after the crash...
I saw the helicopter, but it just seemed to fly around without direction...?

Wouter Weylandt is dead.

@cyclingfans Pete Geyer
Wouter Weylandt (Leopard Trek) has passed away. (RCS/AFP) A very sad day. Thoughts are with his family and friends.

This is unreal.

Very sorry to hear about his loss. And this was going to be such an amazing, epic event.

Very sad to hear that his wife was pregnant too.

Supposedly (I read in a Norwegian news site), he hooked his pedal in a fence on one side of the road and then drifted into a stone wall on the other side.

Also tragic to hear about his pregnant wife.

This is still unreal. Supposedly, he was alone when he fell - and it wasn't in a tight turn or anything. He was just looking behind him to see if there were people catching up to him on the descent, and he god his pedal hooked.

First mountain stage today. Short and intensive. Maybe some of the GC-riders will lose the Giro today?

Rujano up at 7th today. I had high hopes for an intense MTF but it was far from it. It was quite a boring stage tbh.

Tomorrow is completely flat, then on Sunday we have the Etna stage - where the Giro finally begins.

Contador proved to be strong today. Will anyone be able to really challenge him in the GC?

Rujano. If he hadn't lost 5 minutes on the Strade Bianchi stage, no one from his team helped him back.

Otherwise, Contador will win by however many minutes he wants to. But since he's aiming for the Tour as well he won't give 100% in this Giro.

I didn't know there was a thread on this. The day after the crash there were some specials about him on TV, and a close friend of him, another cyclist, Kurt Hovelijnck, was saying he once had a serious crash as well, and Wouter stopped for him and said that they didn't only need an ambulance but a more specialized medical unit called a MUG here. It's what saved his life as he had a cracked skull and was in come for almost a month. Without Wouter he would have died as well. That touched me so deep.

Sky's doing better in California than in Italy. Victory for Ben Swift in Sacramento today.

My favourite, Thor Hushovd, with a mildly disappointing 7th place. He has lost a lot of his sprinting qualities the last couple of years...  :-\
