Song roulette version kári's: SUPER-FINAL ROUND
« on: May 03, 2011, 12:41:31 PM »
So... after a long wait, I can finally start! I've rally been looking forward to this as I've kind of not been interested in new stuff lately, but I'm pretty sure this will light things up again!

Here are the contenders (I'll PM y'all):
Marvellous G
sonatafanica
Gorille85
dtismajesty
dethklok09
Jamesman
Nic35
Quadrochosis
TheVoxyn
zxlkho.

I'm pretty sure you all know the drill, feel free to contact me at any time with questions (in this thread, by PM or by email (I'll PM you all my email)). I'm not sure how many rounds I'm going to do, but some of the categories I'll include may be things like:
- Instrumental
- Electronic
- Obscure
- Short song
- Crazy
- Great intro or outro
- Your personal favourite
- Very new/Very old
- Lyrics
- Live
- Cover
- ...
I probably won't do all of these and I might just leave a lot of the round open if that works better, we'll see.

I'm not going to put any limits as to what you may send, but bear in mind I do not like very heavy metal stuff... and also prog. Not saying you can't send me this, but i's highly unlikely you will score points with a song like that.
As you may or may not know, my favourite genre is postrock. I've listened to a lot of it but I'm always open to more. Here is my last.fm: https://www.last.fm/user/Dark_Rubie . Unfortunately, not all the music I've listened to is on there, so if you've sent me a song I already know I will just tell you and you can send another, no big deal. Also, if you want to send me a song from a band that's got like 10 plays, just try it, I might accept it when I feel I haven't given the band a proper chance.
I'd also like to say that you will stand a better chance if you take the time to explain your choice and why you think I will love it, as opposed to just sending me the song and nothing more.

As for the scoring: in any round, you can get anywhere between 0 and 15 points. Meaning if you've all sent in great songs the 1st place might get 15 points and the last place can get for example 10. In case none of the songs are that great, the first place might just end up with 8 points or so.
I like it this way because now I don't have to stick to a certain template and someone who is far behind can get a lot of points for sending in an awesome song.

I think that about covers it. Again, if you have a question, don't hesitate to ask me.

I look forward to hearing all your new tunes... Good luck!!

Er, yeah I thought I was.  Unless things changed, that's cool too.

Jesus Christ himself* comes down amidst a choir of 2 billion angels singing Handel's Hallelujah chorus. As KrotchRaut shred randomly on guitars made of dragon bones using picks made from God's kidney stones, Jesus heals a blind woman who promptly gives birth onstage to a creation of pure light.

*Yes, Jesus Christ himself. Nothing less will do.

Haha! What I did was copy everyone's name, song name, and band name into a word document, and then typed up my general thoughts for each song as I listened to them one by one (after I had heard them all about 3-4 times already). Then, looking at my thoughts, I did my best to rank them based on what I said about them and what I remembered the most for each song.

Yeah, I tried that yesterday but I keep feeling like I'm not doing the bottom ones enough justice... I've almost completely switched around the list I made yesterday as well... But I think I'm getting there. :D

It was hard for me to rank a lot of the songs, because almost all of them were so good. To me, it came down to what hit me the hardest and what was most memorable.

SOOO, Here are the results!!!
I've switched to scoring on a scale from 0-15 instead of 0-10 because I have 10 contenders... I think it would be most fair if I didn't stick to a fixed score table.

First place: zxlkho
Bloodstream by Stateless
Of all the submissions, this was the first one I heard and I can say I was blown away! Such an amazing track. I love the intro, I love the drum beat, I love the singer’s voice, I love everything about it. “I think I might’ve inhaled you”, great lyric! I only have a little of trip-hop in my library but I really like it. This was a great impulse to get more of the genre, which I certainly will, starting with this band. 12 points.

Second place: Marvellous G
I Only Know (What I Know Now) by James Blake
This track is amazing! Instead of being full of catching melodies, glorious harmonies and such, this track sounds like music stripped down to it’s essence... It’s so simple. I’d heard some James Blake on the radio recently as he’s coming to one of the biggest festivals in Belgium in the summer, and now I’m really thrilled to see him!! When the roulette is over I’m definitely going to grab more of his stuff. I realize this is probably one of the more “out-there” works he’s done, but I’m excited! 11 points.

Third place: Jamesman
Hold Your Breath Down by Future of Forestry
This is great! The refrain has been stuck in my head ever since I heard it.  But there’s so much more to this song! I love that it buids up slow and gains pace, it really fits the song. Also, I love the synth sound in the beginning which was really a pretty weird instrument. I couldn’t believe it was just the three of them, they are very talented! Great pick. 10 points.

Fourth place:  sonatafanica
Heavy Eyes by The Depreciation Guild
This is the kind of music I really like! However I couldn’t help but feel it was a little shallow. I love shoegaze because it feels so deep and heavy-layered which is less so here. Don’t get me wrong, it was great! It just feels a little unreal with the chiptune sounds and the drumcomputer. Also, I kind of feel like the there could have been way more emotion in the song. But I’ll definitely get more of this band! 9 points.

Fifth place: Quadrochosis
Sky Blue by Peter Gabriel
Like you said it didn’t really do much on first listen... But I’ve come around now! Great piece! I can’t help but think of African savannas when I listen to this song... Which is a great thing to think about when it’s 25° outside here in Belgium.. If only it’s be called “Sky Red” or so, then it would have been perfect, as I picture the savanns at sunset! 8 Points.

Fifth place: TheVoxyn
Cecilia by Thomas Dybdahl
When I heard the beginning I kind of was like hrmmm I really don’t like his voice... But then the pace kicked in at around 0:25 and I immediately loved his voice! Great singer, and I love the rythm here. The thing is, in songs like these the lyrics are very important to me, and I couldn’t rally relate to them here. That’s why I ranked it only sixth, even though I really liked it. 8 Points.

Seventh place: Gorille
Providence by Ulver
I didn’t really like this song on first listen, the atmosphere is really dark and the ending creeped me out. But after a few more listens I’ve gotten a Godspeed You! Black Emperor vibe from some of the parts of this song which I really like! It just strikes me as not having the right atmosphere for springtime... But I’ll definitely come back to this next winter, I promise! 7 Points.

Eighth place: Nic35
Wille Zum Untergang by The Ocean
To be honest, I really only like the intro very much. The rest was all right, but way too much drums stuff going on. Normally I’d be into that but I couldn’t help but feel it was really forced in this case. This song would have ranked a LOT higher if it wasn’t for all the drumming, I just couldn’t get myself to like that. 6 Points.

Eighth place: dtismajesty
Knight Of Noir by Susanne Sundfřr
Like you said, she does have a great voice. But I feel like it’s used wrongly in pieces like these. At least for my taste. I can definitely imagine this being someone’s all-time favourite song because of the voice and the atmosphere. Also the backing vocals were completely superfluous for me. 6 Points.

Tenth place: dethklok09
Spirit Dancers by Hilary Stagg
I’m sorry that you finished last, but I just really didn’t like your song. It sounds so cheesy, especially on the video with those images you sent me. It sounds like something that would be played at a spa or something... While relaxing, it doesn’t move me at all. Again, I’m sorry, but I just didn’t like it. I'm sure you'll do better next time! 4 Points.

Scoreboard:
zxlkho - 12
Marvellous G - 11
Jamesman - 10
sonatafanica - 9
Quadrochosis - 8
TheVoxyn - 8
Gorille - 7
Nic35 - 6
dtismajesty - 6
dethklok09 - 4

---------------------

Alright guys! Great submission so far, let's see how you do in Round 2!!!
Round 2: Short songs.
I really like short songs, so send me a short song that you really like. Can be any genre! Short would be 2:30-3 minutes tops! Shorter is okay of course, 2:00-2:30 would be ideal but I'm not going to be strict here. :)

Good luck!
