Except that as noted before, the Queen actually has a damn important job that allows the prime minister to function far more sensibly, and bring in money for the country, overall being pretty much a plus to the country.
If the UK was a republic we would most likely have a president/head of state as well as the prime minister who would head the government. The USA is quite unique in that the head of state doubles as head of government as well. It's true that the royal family brings in revenue through tourism, but if the royals didn't exist anymore I'm sure there would still be a substantial amount coming in from royalty-related tourism, Buckingham Palace wouldn't be going anywhere.
This is getting a bit too P&R....
It wouldn't bring in any where near as much, and as she doubles as a figurehead for important events, it's a net positive all over.
Plus... call me a sceptic, but this is pretty conveniently timed. With the economy as it is, I wouldn't be surprised if there was a bit of "wouldn't it be good to get married now?" kind of prodding.
Frankly, though, I don't give a toss. I've yet to meet one person who cares - which does make me wonder who the target audience is. It's like when everyone was mourning Diana. Yes, it's tragic, but three months on? Who
are these people?!
That question goes both ways, by the way. Not only "who's
actually capable of getting excited about this," but who are the royal family? I know more about David Tennant's life, or Jonathan Ross's, than I do about Queen Liz's. Heck, I know more about what Julius Caesar was like as a person, and nobody on this planet's met the lad. If her spawn gets married then that's just super, but she's not a woman anyone feels any kinship with whatsoever. She doesn't have a visible personality. No notable interests. I don't feel like I'd share any common ground with her. She's just... there. Same applies to the entire family.
Still! I'm not complaining. Pleased someone's making a buzz out of it, 'cause we all benefit. Not gonna bite the hand that feeds me. Lots of currency washing up on our shores - lovely jubbly.
Absolutely baffled by the entire affair, but I'm not in a hurry to question it.
