Lines in the Sand vs. Trial of Tears
« on: April 17, 2011, 01:29:47 PM »
I've flip-flopped a thousand times on these two epics from FII.  I think LitS is more consistent throughout, but it does have some vocal problems, both with James and the other dude, but ToT's best parts are stronger.

Which do you like better?

They are close, sure, but I think that ToT is overall the best song between them. It somehow better delivers the feeling, the mood the song is built on... Moreover, the lyrical content of ToT is among the best of all time (speaking of DT).

Trial of Tears, because Lines in the Sand is the worst Dream Theater song in my opinion.

I am not sure how one could come to such an opinion. May I ask what is so bad about it?

When I first got into DT (back when FII was the new album), I would have said Lines in the Sand, but now it's Trial of Tears and its not even close.

I'm pretty much the exact opposite.  Hearing some damn fine live performances of LitS has really turned me around on it.

Man, I really don't know. LITS has some AWESOME musical bits, and is very, very solid. Trial of Tears as a song is just amazing, and has a great atmosphere.

Trial of Tears.

They both are amazing, but I feel that ToT builds the emotion better and finishes much stronger. It's a top 10 DT song for me, and LiTS is still top 20. Both amazing songs.

I can answer that.  Nothing.

LITS, by a nipple.

Hell's Kitchen / Lines In The Sand > Trial Of Tears > Lines In The Sand

I think the moral of this story is that Falling Into Infinity has some damn good songs on it.

He's saying that if you include Hell's Kitchen as an intro to LITS, then it's better than TOT, but if not, then it's worse.

Lines in the Sand for me.  Trial of Tears has a good beginning, but goes nowhere pretty quickly.  I can't stand the, "open up, open up, not much better than the man you hate" part, the guitar solo is completely unnecessary and does nothing for the song, the quiet part after the guitar solo is too long and drags on and on..... and, "IT'S RAINING" is just annoying.

Contrast that with:  awesome vocal melodies, an amazingly soulful, melodic, tasteful guitar solo, killer guitar/ keyboard chords and just a great, unique feel overall.  Plus, the lyrics in Lines in the Sand are way better and more meaningful than Trial of Tears.

All in my opinion, of course.

Not sure if serious....but if it'll stop you, TOT = Trial of Tears
