German Media?
« on: April 07, 2011, 08:20:30 PM »
So here's my little request to the DTFers. I'm trying to learn German, and I think the very first step is to get into the language. So I'm looking for anything in German. Songs with German lyrics (I'd love to hear a good German band), famous German films, TV Shows, books but with translated version, etc. I know there are quite a number of people in this forum who live in or near Germany, so I'm asking from you guys. Thanks in advance. ;)

You're getting into what I've been doing for two years now :)
Rammstien for music, but the ascent is kinda different from what you'll learn in whatever language program you're working with.
Great German movies:
Der Untergang (Downfall)
Eine Frau in Berlin (A Woman in Berlin)
Die Fälscher (The Counterfeiters)
Sophie Scholl – Die letzten Tage (The Final Days)
I'm still exploring but I've watch each and every one of these movies at least 5 times (Der Untergang at least 50 times) and I'm always learning new words and phrase while keeping it interesting. For me if the subject matter is not interesting then I won't learn anything and I'm interested in WWII so all these movies have aspects of it.
I badly need someone to practice with though but I can't practice by typing cause Pimsuler still hasn't told me anything about how to write the language, all the lessons so far has been just audio.
What language program are you using?
I wouldn't want somebody with 18 kids to mow my damn lawn, based on a longstanding bias I have against crazy fucks.

This thread can not be without mention of Das Boot, one of the best WWII movies ever made (In my ever-so-humble opinion).

If you like German songs with good lyrics, I would suggest
Herbert Grönemeyer (check out the album "Bochum". 80s, but good stuff!)
Die Fantastischen Vier (German rap, with really good lyrics)
Peter Fox (check out "Alles neu" and "Haus am See" on Youtube)

For direct access:

http://nichtlustig.de/toondb/110330.html has some very funny cartoons.

Oh, and I think DVDs are a good suggestion as they usually include subtitles in English and German. So you could watch the movie in German and read the English subtitles. Or watch it in English and read the German subtitles.
And sometimes you can watch the movie in Turkish with Italian subtitles.   ;)

Keep prog alive - see it live!

Regarding music, I'd like to add the band kettcar (alternative rock, good poetic lyrics). You might want to check their stuff out.

Most of the recommendable films have already been mentioned, so I won't add anything there. I could recommend you some good Austrian films, but they are rather difficult to understand because the dialects that are used (especially the Viennese one) tend to stray from standard German quite a bit.
... And you ask me: "Where's my hairspray?"

Well, if they talk in made-up words such as "Jänner", I could see that!
