Telephone pet peeves
« on: March 31, 2011, 11:35:30 AM »
What are yours?  Talking on the phone seems to be one of those activities where everybody is annoyed by one aspect or the other about it.

My latest:  The word "Bye" does not contain the letter "M" anywhere in it!  It is "B" - "Y" - frickin' "E."  See?  No letter "M."  "Mmmm-bye" IS NOT A WORD!

My biggest one is still that after this many decades of having phones, they still sound like white noise and tin cans. Recording technology has progressed so much, but phone just don't seem to both with any of it. They'd rather spend the money adding cameras, touch screens and useless shit to them instead.

so...you'd like the earce piece to be a "beats by dre" noise cancelling headphone then? I think size more than anything has kept the sound tinny.

Here's one I run into a lot at work:

Me: "This is (name here)"

Caller: "Hi (my name) this is (their name) calling from (company)"

Me: "Hello!"

Caller "Hello? This is (their name) can you hear me?"

For some reason when I greet people with a "Hello!" they take is as "Hello? Is anybody there?"  I don't think I voice my "Hello!" with a questioning inflection but whatever.

I hate two things that I have happen too often:

1) "Hey! I'm gonna call you back in a little bit, okay?"  Me:   Then why'd you call me now...?

2) "Hey! ....  -talks to other people in the room and stops talking into the phone for a while- ....What's up? ....  -stops listening and talking again-  ...."

THEN WHY DID YOU CALL?

Bull shit. It's a combination of crappy cheap microphones being used and okay-but-not-great earpieces. Size doesn't even come into it anymore, that's what I mean about improvements in audio technology. My ear buds for my mp3 player aren't expensive, yet they can reproduce sound so much better than what I hear during a phone call. And they have a smaller limit for the size they can use. Every phone call I have has at least one point where I can't make out what someone said because it sounded like white noise mixed with the grown ups in Charlie Brown with a high pass filter on.

This is a very silly thing that bothers me, but... it does! When I call a pizza place, I think they should be legally bound to say "Hello! My name's Beryl or Matthew or Aristotle or Chris. Can I take your order?"

I'd hope they'd be more specific than that, but what bugs me is "Hello, Domino's Pizza." Because then my next sentence is horrifically awkward. "Hi! I'm Rob. I'm calling because I'd like to order a pizza, if that's alright?"

As though there were ever any possibility that I was calling to order bags of cement, or maybe rent a kestrel. It forces me into stating the obvious, and for those two seconds I feel like some sort of simpleton.

I hate it when people call you and ask "What's up?" right off the bat. I don't know, you're the guy who felt the important need to call me, why don't you tell me your reason so I don't need to guess? That's what's up, homie.
HOLY MARY MOTHER OF GOD!!!!!  THIS is why LHK is the President of Awesome.

Why is everything you post the best thing ever said?  :lol

This. I avoid talking on the phone whenever possible. I feel awkward talking to someone when no one is actually physically there... even with webcams it is kind of awkward.
