Very very very cool. I hope they can come up with more stuff like this and start implementing it more often.

Yeah, I remember when this got posted here last time. A huge argument started because someone said something along the lines of how they think this sort of technology is a waste because it encourages people to screw around when using power tools  :lol

Either way, this video really is great.

I don't have audio up here so all I could see was the braking action.  What was the triggering mechanism?

Makes sense,  but what differentiated the steak from the sausage?  PH difference?  I can't imagine that either one of them would be a good conductor.

The steak was on a wooden plank, the sausage was being held by the guy.

But the majority of times a person lops a finger off it's going to be resting on top of the object being cut.  It still should have detected the steak and shut the blade off for the same reason it did the sausage.

I don't think the mechanism was enabled for the steak on the wood, they were just demonstrating that yes, tablesaws do indeed cut through meat.

I'm not positive, but there was nothing grounding the steak. It was just resting on top of the board. When the guy was cutting the hot dog he was actually making contact with it, this would have given it a ground.

I thought about that but he was holding the steak in place; he grounded it.  I suspect Sigz's right.  The safety mechanism was disabled for that demonstration.

That's been around for a while now.  Great invention, but I'm not sure how widespread its use is, and I don't know if it can be retrofit onto an existing saw.

A guy outfitting his garage with shop equipment isn't going to pop the money for it, but somebody setting up a commercial shop will.  The extra investment will be a lot cheaper than the worker's comp claim and the lawsuit that follows when some dipshit cuts his hand off on your dime.

That's a good point.  Occasionally the board you're cutting will bind up and launch.  Having a board rip out of your hands like that can really tear them up.  I'll bet that a lot more injuries occur that way than dismemberment.  Everybody knows not to stick their finger in the blade, but a board launching is unpredictable.

Personally, I stay the hell away from table saws.  Dangerous business.

I can deal with table saws. A few months ago I had to cut down 1/8th inch sheet metal with an industrial band saw, including tiny little tabs no more than 1/4 of an inch wide. That was fucking scary.

Whoops, didn't see that. Only saw (lol) the video once and figured he was pushing the plank of wood.

Well after it tears through the tiny layer of glove, it's still going to make contact with your skin and trip the sensors isn't it?

The video said the hot dog was wet and salty, increasing its conductivity.  I assume either the meat was below the threshold or the mechanism was turned off.

You should never wear gloves while using a machine like a table saw, but like someone mentioned above, after it tears through the glove and pulls your hand toward the blade, your finger will eventually touch the blade.  Since your finger is moving into the blade faster because its pulling the glove in, you may end up with a worse injury than otherwise, but i cant imagine it being much worse.  I didnt watch the video posted here, but i have seen the demos with a hot dog, and it barely broke the skin, so anything slightly worse than that isnt too bad.

The only time I wear gloves when working with anything is if the materials being worked with are metals.

Guess you haven't worked with much fiberglass.

What's your rationale?  I can understand something loose-fitting being a greater risk for entanglement, but you gotta be careful with that anyway.

Fiberglass is the one material I really don't have any experience with. I prefer working without gloves as much as possible, but when I am working with metal, it can tend to heat up from time to time.

I've always been taught not to wear gloves when using rotating machinery.  It can pose the same risk as wearing loose fitting clothing, maybe more so since your hands are more likely to be closer to the workpiece/cutting tool.
