Who knows man, that's just how people posed for pictures for a long time. Many still do. Depends on the culture.

Exactly. If you look at one of the first pictures ever, a shot of a busy Paris street I believe, there is only one person in camera. Why? That person was the only person standing still long enough to be fully exposed. and even that person is blurry from their small movements. All the people going about their daily lives walked out of the shot before they were captured, and hence don't appear in the picture.
